Look, there’s not much to be happy about right now. But in a massively busy news week there was actually a fair bit of exciting, promising, and even cathartic news. So strap in, massage those out of practise cheek muscles and prepare to crack a smile as we dive in.
Good movie news
— Disney+ (@disneyplus) February 4, 2021
Starting off with some long overdue but incredibly great news: Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella is coming to Disney+. Led by Brandy and Paolo Montalban, this is an inclusive, star-studded and utterly charming musical, and we’re incredibly happy to finally see it get the big streaming rerelease that it deserves! Bless yourself with a Cinderella viewing party ASAP.
After the massive success of Leigh Whannell’s Invisible Man, Universal is adding more reimagined monsters to their stable. Alongside Blumhouse’s Karyn Kusama Dracula project, the main studio is also going ahead with a Chloe Zhao helmed sci-fi western take on the bloodsucker. This is almost too cool to take and we’ll be watching both thanks! [THR]
During an interview about his new movie Earwig and the Witch, Goro Miyazaki confirmed that his animation auteur father has no plans on truly retiring. And came back from a break to make his new feature. “But then Hayao Miyazaki, he wasn’t able to stay away that long. He needed to create something in order to live, basically. So he started with making a short film for the [Ghibli] museum, and then he went on to making his new feature-length film” [IndieWire]
Marvel’s highly anticipated Blade movie is heating up. The Mahershala Ali project will reportedly be written by Watchmen scribe and playwright Stacy Osei-Kuffour. A Black woman writing Blade??? YES PLEASE! Now hire Dee Rees to direct and we’ll be overjoyed. [THR]
Isn’t Zendaya great? The answer is yes. And during a Hollywood Foreign Press Association Zoom panel to celebrate Sundance Film Fest, she shared how on her new film Malcom & Marie she fought for the crew to get shares. “We got to create this financial structure where all of our crew members also got points on it, so when it sold, they made money as well, so hopefully that will be a system that can continue,” she said. “I think it’s important that we take care of our people.” [Today]
If you like-a the nerdy movies then you’re in luck. The icon Jamie Lee Curtis will be joining the upcoming Borderlands adaptation. [Deadline] And the babe Justice Smith will be joining Chris Pine in a new Dungeons and Dragons movie! [THR] Love this for us.
Other movie news
According to Vanity Fair Jared Leto and Zack Snyder are remaking the Cro–I mean have put a new version of the Joker in the Justice League project coming to HBO Max. [Vanity Fair]
In more depressing corporate studio news Disney is closing down Blue Sky Studios. According to the report, “sustaining a third feature animation studio was no longer viable for Disney given the current economic realities caused by Covid.” This means that just like the Mouse Guard movie before it, the Nimona movie will no longer be coming to screens. [Deadline]
What’s going on in the world of TV (Some good stuff actually!)
Wynonna Earp fans will likely be sad to hear that the series will be coming to an end with season four on SYFY. After a long fight, the show will at least be able to finish on its own terms. “I’d like to thank our wonderful cast and crew, all of whom were instrumental in bringing Wynonna Earp to our loyal and passionate audience,” said creator and showrunner Emily Andras. “We couldn’t be prouder of these last six episodes on Syfy, and are thrilled to share them with our beloved fans, who have changed our lives forever. I have been honored to tell Wynonna and her family’s story, and along with Seven24, Cineflix and CTV Sci-Fi, are hopeful we can continue to share their inspiring tales in the future.” [THR]
— Jonathan Frakes (@jonathansfrakes) February 7, 2021
And hey, there IS hope for cancelled shows, as after a successful stint on IMDBTV’s ad-supported video on demand service, Leverage has been rebooted and in some cases recast. Jonathon Frakes shared a new image from the beloved crime series on his Twitter.

While we all try and work out the mysteries of WandaVision, Disney wants us to know that we’ve got more Marvel TV coming our way in the shape of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. A new trailer dropped during the Superbowl and it’s all very… MCU.
But Disney isn’t the only corporate overlord making the television. Nope, in fact Amazon is also making all kinds of shows, and movies, and apparently deals with Michael B. Jordan. The actor and producer will have a first look deal with the studio according to a press blast. Amazon states, “Outlier Society will produce and acquire elevated films showcasing diverse, bold filmmakers and talent for the studio’s ever-growing original movies slate. This 360-degree creative relationship with Jordan and Outlier Society will see cross-collaborations within Amazon’s vast businesses, from fashion, Audible to music and more – including the debut of Jordan in Amazon’s Alexa big game ad yesterday.” [Shadow and Act]

Look at our Kate Bishop. Isn’t she beautiful?? We love her and will protect her forever.
I’m beyond thrilled to share that on March 16, I’ll be launching a new show on @Netflix called Waffles + Mochi! I'm excited for families and children everywhere to join us on our adventures as we discover, cook, and eat delicious food from all over the world. pic.twitter.com/dedUWMp9SY
— Michelle Obama (@MichelleObama) February 9, 2021
The Obamas’ ongoing Netflix deal will be providing us with some new pop culture puppets. Via her twitter, Michelle Obama revealed she’ll be hosting a new kids cooking show Waffles+Mochi about food from around the world alongside some very cute anthropomorphic food!
Big news! The creator of Over The Garden Wall is working on a Redwall adaptation for Netflix! I'm already preparing myself for the feast scenes. pic.twitter.com/6bie3CwpqI
— NX (@NXOnNetflix) February 10, 2021
Is this the best news ever??? I personally say that it might be. The books of Redwall have been bringing cozy delight to readers for decades and now we’re getting a new adaptation. To make it even better it’s coming from the mind behind Over the Garden Wall… two wall icons coming together to make a delectable and delightful movie and series for our eyes. Also this better include a lot of that classic Redwall food and feasting please.
It’s pilot season, baby, which means we’ve got so much weird but maybe good TV news going on. The Clone High reboot has been picked up for two seasons at HBO Max who are ironically trying to make themselves an animation hub post selling off one of the biggest anime services in the world. There’s also news of a Mindy Kaling “adult” Velma Scooby Doo spin-off and if she’s finally canon gay then we are in! [THR]
More reboots are coming from The CW, who have commissioned a pilot of the very silly and likely very Riverdale influenced Powerpuff Girls reboot. It’s going to be live action and focus on the girls as weary millenials who are sick of fighting crime… until like Mojo Jojo comes back we guess? Who knows, it sounds ridiculous but so is Riverdale and that’s a televisual masterpiece. The network is also bringing a new DC hero to the screen with Ava Duvernay’s Naomi. Based on a Brian Michael Bendis character, this will seemingly be a new addition to the ever-growing and changing CW-Arrowverse. [Deadline]
Disney has released the first image and full voice cast of their Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur animated series and it looks CUTE! You can check out the incredible cast below.
“Diamond White (The Bold and the Beautiful, Disney’s The Lion Guard) will star as Lunella Lafayette, aka Moon Girl. She will be joined by Alfre Woodard (Marvel’s Luke Cage) as Lunella’s grandmother, Mimi; Libe Barer (Sneaky Pete) as Lunella’s best friend and manager, Casey; Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live) as Lunella’s mom, Adria; Jermaine Fowler (Superior Donuts) as Lunella’s dad, James Jr.; Fred Tatasciore (Marvel’s Avengers Assemble) as Devil Dinosaur; and Gary Anthony Williams (Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins) as Lunella’s grandfather, Pops. Series executive producer Laurence Fishburne will voice the recurring role of The Beyonder, who is described as “a curious and mischievous trickster.”” [CBR]
The Punky Brewster continuation is real and happening, and it’s gunna be gay! Punky Brewster’s best friend, Cherie (played by Cherie Johnson), will have a love interest played by Jasika Nicole (Fringe, The Good Doctor, Welcome to Nightvale)! [TVLine]
Looks like HBO Max’s The Last of Us series is coming together and it’s looking far better than we expected. Game of Thrones‘ breakout Bella Ramsey will be taking on the role of Ellie which seems far too good to be true. And she’s not alone…[THR]
— Variety (@Variety) February 11, 2021
Yep! HBO Max needed that big dad energy for Joel so they went to the internet’s fave space dad and hunk Pedro Pascal. A wonderful choice that once again seems too good to be true.
Lucasfilm Calls Gina Carano Social Media Posts “Abhorrent”; Actress No Longer Employed By ‘Mandalorian’ Studio https://t.co/wwOJBrtokQ
— Deadline Hollywood (@DEADLINE) February 11, 2021
In more we can’t quite believe it news, Disney has reportedly let Gina Carano go (or at least not re-signed her) for her “Abhorrent” social media posts. It took them long enough to make a statement but it finally happened. Also sounds like she was going to be leading her own show before she began her racist social media meltdown, so expect to see her doing the right-wing martyr news circuit soon.
‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel ‘House of the Dragon’ Adds Four to Cast https://t.co/QCJnYJAxML
— Variety (@Variety) February 11, 2021
Let’s end on some more surprisingly good casting with HBO adding four new members to their Game of Thrones prequel. While we’re loath to get excited for more GOT this is… a great cast. “Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Eve Best, and Sonoya Mizuno are all joining the highly-anticipated prequel to the megahit HBO show. They join previously announced stars Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Matt Smith.”
Celebrating brave women
A number of incredible women came out against Joss Whedon (again) sparked by Charisma Carpenter who was inspired by Ray Fisher’s ongoing battle with Warner Bros.
— charisma carpenter (@AllCharisma) February 10, 2021
Buffy was a toxic environment and it starts at the top. @AllCharisma is speaking truth and I support her 100%. There was a lot of damage done during that time and many of us are still processing it twenty plus years later. #IStandWithRayFisher #IStandWithCharismaCarpenter https://t.co/WJAmDGm76C
— Amber Benson (@amber_benson) February 10, 2021
Michelle Trachtenberg also posted to Instagram, reposting Sarah Michelle Geller’s brief note of support for the victims and adding that the environment on the show was “not appropriate.” Anthony Michael Head lamented that he didn’t realize what was happening on set, and other actors who had roles on Buffy, such as Clare Cramer and James C. Leary have posted their support of Carpenter. Sophia Butler, Geller’s stuntdouble on Buffy, also posted her support — last year her and her husband, who also worked on the production, did an interview alleging a toxic environment under Whedon. They eventually quit the show. [DailyDot]
Those that we’ve lost
Nazi-fighting hunk, Oscar-winning actor, and general great guy Christopher Plummer passed away this week at the age of 91. Rest in Peace. [Deadline]
