Previously on Comics: A Thor-ny Subject

Good morning! Hopefully your weekend went well. I don’t have a lot of news for you this week, so I’ll just jump right in.

The Doug Wright Awards have announced their 2019 inductees for the Giants of the North, a hall of fame for Canadian cartoonists. Congratulations to Fiona Smyth and also a posthumous congratulations to Alootook Ipellie, who passed in 2007.

Marvel have announced that Jane Foster will be the new Valkyrie, after her time as Thor. It’s a…choice, I guess, and they’re trying to spin it as empowering, but it’s hard not to notice that this comes on the heels of Laura Kinney having to surrender the mantle of Wolverine back to Logan. Anyway, it’s also weird given that Saladin Ahmed and Javier Rodriguez just gave us a comic book version of Valkyrie based on Tessa Thompson’s portrayal. I guess we’ll just sideline that too! We see you, Marvel.

James Murdoch, a few billion richer from the sale of 21st Century Fox to Disney, is looking to invest that money in comic books, which sounds like a terrible, terrible idea, given what the Murdochs generally do wherever they go. The Wall Street Journal has the details on it, but those details are unfortunately behind a paywall.

Women Cartoonists are getting their own award!
