Book Beat: Shadowshaper Gets Optioned and I Meet Billy Boyd

Hello all! Hope you all had a good World Book Day on Sunday! This past week’s book news seems to be “books and media.” Obviously “media” can mean movie and TV adaptations of books but it also includes how authors express their opinions on social media. What does that all mean? You’ll just have to read to find out…

YA readers of color rejoice: Anika Noni Rose has optioned Daniel José Older’s urban-fantasy YA Shadowshaper series! I’ve read the first book of the series (the second is to come out this September), and it was refreshing to have a teen girl of color as a protagonist. Be sure to grab a copy from your local bookstore or library – you’ll be ahead of the curve if the series becomes a TV show or movie.

In other book-option news, Mindy Kaling and 3 Arts Entertainment have optioned the rights to the non-fictional memoir Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? And Other Questions You Should Have Answers To When You Work in the White House. Written by former White House Barack Obama White House deputy chief of staff for operations Alyssa Mastromonaco, Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? has been described as “less political diatribe than a gossip session with an older sister” and covers nearly a decade of Mastromonaco’s work relationship with Obama. I can’t wait for Kaling’s take.

Meanwhile the Hulu miniseries of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale was made available this Wednesday. While it’s no surprise that feminist themes cropped up during the show’s promo tour, it is surprising that some of the show’s cast is downplaying that feminism. Atwood, of course, had some choice words in response (see above) and cast members Yvonne Strahovski and Joseph Fiennes at least have emphasized the feminist nature of the story.

Finally WWAC writers attended and tweeted C2Ec in Chicago and Silicon Valley Comic Con (SVCC) in San José, California this past weekend! If you want to catch up you can find WWAC writer Alenka Figa’s C2E2 tweets on the WWAC Twitter account and read my SVCC tweets by checking the Twitter hashtag #StephanieAtSVCC. Spoilers: I met and interviewed Lord of the Rings actor Billy Boyd.
