Geek Mystique: Lifestyle News for August

Hey! It is the second installment of Geek Mystique, the lifestyle section’s monthly lifestyle news column. These links are lovingly curated by I (um…me), your lifestyle editor, based on what is trending right now…and also just what I really like such as Lisa Frank leggings and mermaid crowns.

More Pokemon Go Swag to Accompany Your Gaming

Like sex toys! No, I am not kidding, there are Pokemon sex toys. Check them out here, but of course, NSFW. (Unless you work in a sex positive environment, for which I envy you.)

Unfortunately, it’s not all fun and games. Sometimes, you just have to protect yourself because of things like this. WWAC Contributor, Stephanie Tran, is crazy about these Pokemon Pikachu 3D Printed Finger Puppet Keychains.

If part of the appeal of Pokemon for you is the adorable design, then you can sign up for Kawaii boxes and get a monthly load of freakishly adorable goodies from Japan and Korea. Brands include Hello Kitty, My Melody, Rilakkuma, and more. We love monthly subscription boxes here at WWAC, so this is yet another not-good-for-our-wallet discovery!

Finally, if you are a Pokemon fan or a Sailor Moon fan then you should check out this cosplay. If you like both, it’s like a wonderful melding of your favorite things.

I wonder how heavy the tail is?

…Speaking of Cosplay

Did you see John Barrowman’s fantastic Unbeatable Squirrel Girl cosplay for SDCC?! Be still my beating heart! Fashionably Geek has a collection of all of his cosplays for SDCC here.

In other SDCC 2016 cosplay news, the Ladies of BurlXmen showed up at the con in X-men themed burlesque cosplay. Check out this Fashionably Geek post to see their bedazzled and be-gartered costumes.

You can also get your glam on with this DC Bombshell Batwoman cosplay tutorial from The Stylish Geek. Now, I would just like a DC Bombshell meets A League of Their Own movie, but DC would probably just screw it up anyway…considering their track record.

However, my favorite cosplay itemthis month is this woman’s response to her employer’s sexist and racist dress code which penalized her for wearing a headscarf and having things like boobs. Fed up, she started wearing various cosplays to work that adhered to the discriminatory dress code.

A whole new world of seashell crowns!

Fantastical Fashion

That is one of my favorite things about fashion: the element of costume. The opportunity to engage our fantasies and whimsies via clothing. I am currently obsessed with engaging my inner Little Mermaid via these Mermaid Crowns from Etsy shop Chelsea’s Flowercrowns. Fashionably Geek has a roundup of some of them here.

Another way to get your inner royalty on is via Pink Plastic, a brand that “aspires to encourage ALL women of different shapes, ethnicities, and sizes to find their inner princess.” Check out their offerings here.

And, let’s not forget about Jedi princesses! This art deco wedding gown, inspired by Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Rey, is everything my art deco loving, Jedi princess self needs.

Ginnis needs these leggings, stat.

If you want something a little more practical, Disney has teamed up with Torrid to release a Tinker Bell line, while Dooney and Bourke has released a line of bags for Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, and Dumbo. Hot Topic has also recently done their own fashion meets cartoon team up with Cartoon Network, and depending on your definition of practical, THIS AMAZING LISA FRANK FASHION LINE is everything a 90s child has ever needed.

You can also do a little stealth cosplay and channel your inner engineering and ghost-busting badass via these Holtzmann glasses (that is if you have $87.00 to spare).

And, finally, because it is a truth universally acknowledged that you can never have too many leggings, here’s a range of leggings to suit many of your Marvel superhero needs.

And Some Miscellaneous Stuff

Wonder Woman celebrated her 75th anniversary with a line of USPS stamps. As someone who loves sending snail mail, I am stoked about these! The stamps include a range of Wonder Woman iterations from the Golden Age to now.

I’m also a sucker for minimalist book covers, and this poster essentially combines three passions of mine: design, books, and crossing things off lists. That’s because it’s a scratch off poster that you can use to track your reading of the classics.

We are pretty big into tattoos on WWAC, so I had to share this video of the first tattoo done by a machine!

And for more in crazy tattoo technology, MIT and Microsoft teamed up to create a smart, temporary tattoo. What the what?!
