Quick Change Cosplay: Jem Jamming Around

Quick Change Banner

It is eight o’clock in the morning, and your fellow geek calls you up and announces a last-minute con she has decided to attend. Obviously, you have to go with her, but what to wear? It is now time to perform your own superhuman feat and put together an acceptable geek outfit from easily found items. From the depths of my under-slept brain came the idea for Quick Change. Like every superhero before me who must race into action, I too will change into my comic-loving alter ego in record (or just sort of not-slow) time. The mission: find an outfit inspired by a comic book character in a thrift store, resale store, or sales rack in under 20 minutes for under $20.

My grandmother is in town! (Hi, Gma!) So she got to see up close and personal the amazing experience that is watching me act a fool in my local thrift store. But I get ahead of myself.

In case you haven’t seen them, WWAC’s been rewatching Jem and the Holograms and recapping it for you! The show is growing on me, though I’m apparently terrible at keeping up with the rewatch. I am now super excited for the live-action movie and the new comics which debut today!

So, we set off planning on doing one outfit for Jerrica, the boring young woman who runs a young girls’ home, and one outfit for Jem, the superstar. So much more happened.

Let’s just say that I got a little carried away. I’m not a huge fan of Jem herself or her goody two shoes normal persona. And there were so many dresses that I just kept thinking, man, being one of the Misfits sounds so much more fun than being a Hologram. You get to have fun. You get to feel so many angry fast feelings, and, as we’ve pointed out over and over again, you get to sing better songs.

So, while I picked up this outfit for Jerrica:

Oh, how…yellow.

I also decided to pick up a few more interesting dresses. My grandmother was a great cart-pusher while I pulled things left and right from the racks.

Below friends is what happens when you are thinking about how badly you wished you had been one of the bad girls in high school or at least slightly more like The Misfits than The Holograms.

First, prices: each outfit came in under $20! A miracle if there’s ever been one. The most expensive outfit was Jerrica’s because neither the dress nor the shoes were on special discount, but even that only came to $17.50. An excellent day for shopping at Unique.

And here are the pixlr disasters, for your viewing pleasure:

Me-Jerrica and my boring boyfriend.

Then I turn into Jem for a show:

Oh, sashes are such a fashion statement

But then, the joy of event, the pride of the whole day:

This was my first mini skirt and it taught me that I have the longest legs in creation.

Well, Readers, I am giving myself an A+ on this. I did not recreate any actual outfits, but rather the spirit of the outfits. The most important part is that this is the most fun I have had doing a Quick Change post, and I did so many characters in one outing!
