The new year is right around the corner and you need a new calendar. Take a peek at the farthest thing from that commercial mall kiosk with the Mama Calendar: a calendar about and for progressive, feminist, activist mothers and their families, friends, and allies everywhere.
Coleen Murphy’s Kickstarter for Mama Calendar: 2015 Edition aims to get this year’s edition in the hands of the many. Coleen has been creating these annual community building and consciousness raising resource calendars since 2000. Inspired by her online community, affiliated with the hipMama zine, she’s created these calendars in her home, starting out cutting and gluing by hand but now using a 2003 version of Publisher.
Her passion for the project is evident in her rally for submissions: “people, mothers, fathers, partners, kids, friends, and allies, the mama calendar is what it is because of your words, pictures, dreams, visions, rants, raves, recipes, recipes for revolution.” The calendar features photos of mamas, babies, children, youth, dads, and friends, as well as a guide to mama-made zines, alternative parenting resources, recipes, recipes for revolution, great dates in radical mama herstory, and the work of numerous artist/activist/mamas.
Since the calendar has already been printed, they are ready to ship at the end of the campaign in December. Important to note, it’s a limited edition run as only 100 calendars have been made.
Backer reward levels are simple with only four options available. At the $5 level, you get a thanks for supporting the project. The $12 level gets you a calendar. And the $25 level offers the calendar and a zine grab bag. If you’re lucky enough to be in New Orleans, there’s a special $25 level that includes the calendar and homemade cookies. Yummy!
