Ed Piskor’s Grand Design for the X-Men

The first 30 years of the X-Men, including Chris Claremont’s record-setting run, is legendary. With almost two decades and 200 issues within Claremont’s tapestry alone, it’s hard to imagine how all of that could be condensed into a mere six books. For someone to even think of doing so, they would have to be either extremely confident in their own abilities or more than a little bit arrogant. Auteur cartoonist Ed Piskor freely admits to the latter and has a portfolio and Eisner Award to back up the former. That’s why, riding on the high of his 2015 Eisner win...

Get Your Game On: #MeToo, Women of LEGO NASA, and Gambling Gamers

I am pleased to report that, after flailing and whining about how hard Overwatch’s update to its “Junkenstein’s Revenge” battle is, my friends and I have now mastered it and I have even scored myself Symmetra’s gorgeous new dragon costume. This year’s version of the battle now includes Symmetra as “The Summoner,” increasing the challenge of the four-person mission to defend a castle from Junkenstein and his minions. It also offers an additional version that lets players play as another four characters from the growing game roster. If you’re not playing Overwatch yet and have no idea what I’m talking about,...

Get Your Game On: Gearing Up for Extra Life

I’ve been doing a lot of walking this week, starting with last Sunday’s Terry Fox Run. This week, I’m turning my thoughts to a different charity as I ramp up my Extra Life campaign. There are many reasons why gamers worldwide will be gathering together on November 4th to support the Children’s Miracle Network. My reason began over a decade ago when a Sick Kids Hospital radio-a-thon woke me up to the struggles of children and families at the hospital and the 24/7 fight to give those kids the lives they deserve, free of pain and illness. I made a commitment...

Mass Effect Andromeda Diaries #6: All Hail the Krogan

By now you’ve probably heard that, for various reasons, Mass Effect Andromeda kinda sucks. Over my past five diaries, I’ve painted some of the issues, but hey, after investing 80 or so hours, I’m gonna keep going at this point. The tedium of poor story, sidequests deserving of much side eye, and Liam and Cora pissing me off weren’t enough to deter me. So either because I’m a hopelessly obsessed BioWare masochistic fangirl or–yeah, okay, that’s exactly what I am. By now, my friend was hours ahead of me and based on her emoji-filled flail texts, in combination with my...

Get Your Game On: The Music of The Rock and Dear Esther Live in Concert

This should be a busy week for gaming for me. I should be hunting Summer Games loot boxes in Overwatch and saving the world from the Legion. But I’ve barely completed my requisite nine arcade mode wins and I’ve only gotten through the introductory mission in Agents of Mayhem. Steam let me know that Dragon’s Dogma is on sale, and, while I am tempted, I must resist simply because it seems that my nice, relaxing summer is far busier than I had originally planned it to be. Oh well. Even as more come out (I’ll be making my first...
