Hello and good morning! It’s your Friendly Neighbourhood Previously Editor with a short, sharp round-up of comics news.

In celebration of Mary Shelley’s 227th birthday, we’ve got some Frankenstein news for you. Legendary Comics has announced a new graphic novel featuring Boris Karloff’s iconic version of Frankenstein’s monster. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein Starring Boris Karloff is set to be created by Kerry Gammill and El Garing and goes on sale on October 22, 2024. If you’re interested in more Frankenstein-related news and reviews, WWAC has covered the monster, the scientist, and the author extensively. Just search for Frankenstein on our site.

The Cartoonist Cooperative has announced the Nib & Ink Festival 2025! The online-only comics festival is now accepting participants and exhibitors. More information is available on their site.

Marvel Comics celebrated 85 years in August and had a pretty thorough run-down of its history on its website. However, the accompanying video left much to be desired as its focus was largely on the Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than the comics-verse.

In related Marvel news, artist Jen Bartel remarked on Twitter that artists don’t get paid when the art they’ve created for mega-corporations is used in other formats, such as for Marvel Snap cards. The comment sparked a great deal of conversation, with other artists weighing in on how predatory big corporation contracts are, that even unionized artists aren’t protected, and of course, that pay increases are non-existent. We’ve covered the state of the comics industry for creatives before on Previously, but this discussion by Bartel and her fellow artists is a reminder that the comics industry, as much as we love its product, is built on the backs of exploitation. We need to call it out regularly and loudly.

Once again, I must leave you on an upsetting note. Do try and read, watch, or go somewhere that makes you happy. Stay safe from the heat and drink plenty of water. Disconnect when you have to. And be kind to others, but not to everyone. Take care, and we’ll see each other soon!
