Previously on Comics: Gaming Layoffs, RIP Carl Weathers, and New Supergirl Found

A very good morning from your Friendly Neighbourhood Previously Editor. I hope your January was interesting. I’m just glad it’s over—wow, was it the longest month ever.

Starting off with some frustrating news about layoffs in the gaming industry. 61 SEGA employees in the United States are set to be laid off. This is after Artificer announced a layoff of 28 employees. The gaming industry has been hit with significant layoffs, as has the entire tech world. This has been going on for most of 2023, and it’s continuing into 2024. Kotaku is keeping an updated list of all the layoffs and it does not make for great reading, folks. These layoffs make me extremely upset—I got laid off last year and there is nothing just or fair about the process.

Not to kick you when you’re down but we got some sad news from the world of entertainment. Carl Weathers has died at the age of 76, reports the BBC. The actor best known for his roles in Rocky, Predator, and The Mandalorian, started his career as an NFL player, which was news to me. I’ve spent most of my life seeing Weathers on the big and small screen and was really enjoying his effervescent turn as Greef Karga in The Mandalorian. Rest in peace.

Micropress publisher ShortBox is set to close its physical shop for good, reports ComicsBeat. The ShortBox Comics Fair, which founder Zainab Akhtar started during the early days of the pandemic, is still going to continue, it seems.

Enough with the sad stuff! On to happier, fun news. Star Wars and Marvel are collaborating on an Ahsoka Tano limited series. Set to be written by Rodney Barnes with art by Steven Cummings and Georges Jeanty, the series will be tied to the Disney+ Ahsoka show from 2023.

Duncan Jones is set to direct an animated adaptation of Rogue Trooper, by Dave Gibbons and Gerry Finley-Day. The initial voice cast includes Dunkirk’s Aneurin Barnard, Agent Carter’s Hayley Atwell and Jack Lowden of Slow Horses, reports Variety.

Lastly, the DC film universe reboot has found it’s new Supergirl in House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock, who will play the hero in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, reports Hollywood Reporter.

That’s it from me. May your February be swift and sweet!
