REVIEW: Die Horny is a Love Letter to Power Rangers and Kink

Rebecca Mock’s Die Horny is a kind of story we’ve all seen before—the alien conqueror lands on Earth and begins a wave of devastation! Earth’s pre-interstellar technology and defenses are nowhere near advanced enough to defeat the encroaching army! The towering general of the alien armies falls in love with a  kinkster in a gimp suit! Wait, what?

There are comics that sometimes feel like they’re made by assembly-line; multiple artists working in a house style, nearly interchangeable, keeping up with the prolific output of writers who work nonstop for unhealthy amounts of time each day. Then there’s a comic like Die Horny, a unique 64-page book that could only be the work of its creator. Rebecca Mock, who along with Hope Larson won an Eisner this year for Salt Magic, is described in the press release for Die Horny as a “fandom enthusiast and recovering anime club president.” The book itself is marketed as being for fans of Power Rangers, 90s anime, and being open-minded.

Those influences absolutely shine on every page. The alien general in question, Wortizabella, is a towering giant of a woman, twice the height of most humans, and impressively muscled. As is laid out in the start of the tale, she has given up her role as the head of the Splint army in pursuit of a life of love with Iggy, a human. In the backmatter, Mock discusses the inspirations for Wortizabella and Iggy both, and the influences come through loud and clear. Wortizabella in particular draws elements from each of her named inspirations in extremely fun ways, combining both of  Queen Bansheera’s looks into a single form, and playing with the concept of an identifiable face in armor, as seen in Camille’s look.

A series of several Power Rangers villains that serve as inspiration for Wortizabella, the main character of Die Horny, by Rebecca Mock.
1. Wortizabella’s design in the Die Horny backmatter, 2 and 3, the two forms of Queen Bansheera (Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue), 4. Tenaya 7 (Power Rangers RPM), 5 and 6. Armored and normal forms of Camille (Power Rangers Jungle Fury).

It adds up to a look that’s indulgent of Mock’s personal tastes, and as such Wortizabella’s design, while busy, is fun, and the way she moves through the story is well-considered. Mock’s skill as an artist should be unquestioned after that Eisner win, but what’s impressive here is the way they switch up styles—were her name not on both this book and Salt Magic, you could be forgiven for not immediately noticing they had drawn both.

At Wortizabella’s side is Iggy, her love and an absolute shrimp of a man who carries the influences of anime classics like Lupin III. Mock has done me the favor of crafting her own graphic featuring his archetype:A graphic composed by Rebecca Mock for Die Horny, depicting Lupin from the Lupin the 3rd and Arataka Reigen from Mob Psycho 100 as "slutty shrimps"

Folks, if I had seen nothing else about this book I would have read it on this graphic alone. This is delightful. Fortunately, so is the story itself. Over the course of 64 pages, General Wortizabella and Iggy confront one of her former subordinates, Lieutenant Krustillion, who makes a play for power and attempts to depose Wortizabella, so that he can resume the Splint invasion and conquer Earth for himself. It’s an enjoyable character juxtaposition, with Krustillion’s aggressive bid for power contrasting against Wortizabella’s confident, absolute authority. All of this plays out against the background of humans forced to work in a mine for Krustillion, digging up quartz crystal highly prized by the Splint army.

Scenes not focused on the power struggle between the two aliens instead opt to tell the story via Iggy and two humans named Mat and Val, both of whom are attempting to escape Krustillion’s tyranny. They can’t understand Iggy’s love for the General, and they absolutely don’t trust him or his fervent proclamations of devotion to her. The resulting tale is unabashedly kinky and horny in a way that entirely too many comics simply aren’t allowed to be, right down to Iggy’s perpetual sporting of a gimp mask and pleas to be choked by his lover. There appears to be a planned volume two on the way, featuring the introduction of Mock’s very own take on the Sentai team, and I for one can’t wait. If you want a monsterfucker book for the ages, Die Horny is the comic for you, and if you’re not sure? Mock has an eight page preview on their website.
