Seven Seas Pubwatch: September 2022

September is here which school is in session! Wishing students of all ages a happy and safe semester or a new school year! I’m not built for summertime anymore, thanks to the heinous duo that is climate change and global warming so I’m happy to start welcoming the colder weather. Sweater weather, soup season and sign me up for all the perhaps overpriced seasonal drinks that make people happy! Seven Seas has new books for romance across the board, a science fiction title that I read that I can’t stop thinking about and some new brand-new license announcements! Jump in, and take a seat as we get into it!

For Those Who Dare to Enjoy Sci-Fi:

Correspondence from the End of the Universe

Story & Art by: MENOTA
Release Date: 09/06/2022
Translation: Kathryn Henzler
Lettering: Nicole Roderick

Sold as a “A romantic sci-fi workplace drama about a spaceman pining for Earth and the partner he left behind”, this manga took me by surprise. As a science fiction lover, I looked this title up on the Book Walker site and read the preview of the first chapter and was blown away and had to go out an buy a physical copy. Marko, is a college graduate about to leave home for the first time and travel the world with his lover. He’s on the cusp of a new chapter in his life yet nothing prepares him for what happens next! He is abducted by a mysterious being to the end of the universe, ruining his plans. While there he’s told his new work doing everything from growing stars to answering sos calls from spaceships.

What lays out before him is a ten year mission he’s stuck with and while his new coworkers and boss are friendly and helping him adjust to a place far removed from Earth, he’s hopeless homesick and out of his league of everything he’s ever known. Volume one of Correspondence from the End of the Universe is a swoon worthy tale of a young man from Earth far from home learning that the most “alien” thing in the section of the universe that he’s in–is him and his longing for home and the dreams of his that are home. From learning about the cultures of different races from different planets to the intriguing starts of life of many cosmic bodies in the galaxy, this manga is a treat for anyone who loves sci-fiction and intricate world budding that keep surprises at every bend!

DINOSAURS. YES DINOSAURS:

Dinosaur Sanctuary

Story & Art by: Itaru Kinoshita
Release Date: 09/27/2022
Translation: John Neal
Lettering: JM Iitomi Crandall

Hello, we’ve reached that very niche and weird place in manga where you may might just the book you never knew you needed! So the story goes in Dinosaur Sanctuary that in 1946, a remote island was discovered where dinosaurs never went extinct. When word got out, folks went Jurassic Park by way of genetic manipulation and breeding so the dino population soared and parks popped up until a terrible accident happened. This great tragedy served as a catalyst in dino-mania dying down and certain parks falling on hard times. Fast forward to the year 2021 of one dinosaur-obsessed young woman named Suma Suzume who is the newest rookie to Enoshima Dinoland who is about to learn if her childhood dream is worth pursuing against the backdrop of capitalism and the extinction of dinosaurs?

This manga is being sold as “rookie zookeeper care-taking dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes, sure to delight dinosaur lovers of all ages” has richly detailed artwork that just nails it with everything I ever wanted to know about these celebrated long-dead creatures. ( Look there’s even a research assistant attached to the credits of the manga: Shin-ichi Fujiwara!) Reading through the preview reveals a great cast of supporting characters by way of Sume’s new coworkers and boss and a really cool narrative in place. Dinosaurs, y’all. I’ll be reading this when it drops later this month.

For The Mature Readers Who Like Spice and Smut:

Ladies on Top

Story & Art by: NEJIGANAMETA
Release Date: 09/13/2022
Translation: Jacqueline Fung
Adaptation: Emlyn Dornemann
Lettering: Ray Steeves

Come through Seven Seas with this Josei awakening!!! Seven Seas is pushing forward with its Steamship imprint, dedicated to sexy romance for women. The newest title in the lineup is Ladies on Top featuring Mizuki looks like an ordinary office lady—cute, quiet, and looking for Mr. Right. Her problem? Relationships where her male partners take the lead just turn her off. She’s looking for love but keeps getting dumped.

Things change for the better when Mizuki discovers Shinomiya, a seemingly perfect co-worker who likes aggressive women, and she experiences a fiery awakening. This manga is being sold as two people “shedding gender stereotypes and embracing their sensual selves” so I am game for manga centering women and their lives that subverts what we know in a sexy and fun delivery. This may be a hit for the Steamship imprint from a few reviews I’ve read and heard from friends. I’m excited to get my hands on new Josei and this one in particular.

Love is an Illusion!

Story & Art by: Fargo
Release Date: 09/27/2022
Format: Manhwa
Translation: Lezhin Entertainment, America Localization Team
Lettering: Karis Page

Coming a bit later this month is the print release of another hit from the Lezhin web comic app, Love is an Illusion! The story goes that Hye-sung spent his entire life believing he was an Alpha, the jackpot of the genetic lottery. But his world is flipped upside down when he finds out he isn’t a dominating Alpha, but a submissive Omega. His frustration is pushed to its limits when he constantly crosses paths with a very handsome Dojin, a true Alpha.

Dojin supposedly can’t stand Omegas, but his head-butting with Hye-sung results in sizzling chemistry. This hit omegaverse webtoon on Lenzhin was another comic I missed and it is one the BL circles have been talking about and reading for ages. Joining Killing Stalking (by Koogi) this first volume will be 400-page deluxe paperback with color inserts with no censorship for all the sexy panels and pages. I’m very excited for fans of the spicer comics as Seven Seas is delivering it and the web comic to printed book pipeline is growing!
