Previously on Comics: What Even Is Time

I guess it’s Monday? Sure, okay. Time is fake anyway.

Comics still aren’t coming out. Many folks are very up in arms with this fact, some impatient, some saying they should wait.

BOOM! and Netflix have inked a first-look deal for adaptations of BOOM! properties, which is an interesting move, as the primary BOOM! output is either creator-owned or licensed properties. Obviously the licensed stuff is out the window, so did BOOM! just sell option rights en masse to Netflix without the input of those books’ creators? Does this affect the royalties creators will make on the sale of those books? Will they earn royalties on any adaptations that get produced? I dunno. It’s weird and murky.

The Slate Book Review and the Center for Cartoon Studies have announced their shortlist for the 2020 Cartoonist Studio Prize, with the winners to be announced in May. Congratulations to the nominees!

Milo Manara is being hailed again, for…paying homage to emergency workers during the pandemic. He has done this by…drawing some pictures of slender, conventionally attractive white women wearing emergency worker gear. Sure, fine. The Washington Post thinks it’s very touching.

You’ve probably heard about the Twitter auction comic creators are putting on to help retailers during the crisis if you’re on social media at all, but it got a write up in the New York Times, so that’s neat. After a bit of a messy rollout (Twitter is not exactly ideal for this function [or most functions, including its intended one]), there is now a master spreadsheet that you can peruse easily.

The Very Very Shopping Network is coming back! If you’re unfamiliar, in the wake of the extremely last-minute cancellation of ECCC in March, Jen Vaughn and Jazzlyn Stone banded together with some other quick thinkers and streamed a Home Shopping Network style show the weekend the con was supposed to be. It was a very cool move that didn’t get anywhere near covering the total number of folks that would’ve been tabling at the con, so it’s cool to see it come back and give more voices a chance. There’s no date yet, but keep an eye out! It’s fun to watch and you might find something you just have to own.

SDCC is cancelled,  but the Eisners are going forward anyway. Nice of them to persevere and ensure that we win our award.

In the midst of Washington state’s Stay-At-Home order, Seattle favorite Phoenix Comics and Games was broken into over the weekend:

They’re still waiting on a damage estimate, but if you want to help, the best thing you can do is put an order in through their website—they’re still fulfilling orders despite this setback!

That’s all I got for you. Stay safe. Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other.
