Geek Mystique: Lifestyle News for October

Y’all, there’s so much going on this month, this is going to be a packed one, what with the Geek High Holy Day, that would be Halloween, approaching! Sure, we geeks like any excuse to cosplay and indulge our geek fantasies all year, but there’s just something about the month of October that makes all that extra special.

Holy, Geek Fashion, Batgirl!

outlander-fraser-tartan-reversible-cape-via-torridSo many announcements for geek-inspired, everyday fashion this month. No time to dawdle, let’s get to it!

Hot Topic has been on a roll with this Once Upon a Time collection and this DC TV jacket collection, the Her Universe Women of Marvel collection, but what I am most excited about is this Outlander collection, which fortunately sister brand Torrid also has a collection for!

Since October means cooler weather–usually–I found some great cold weather wear for my fellow geeks. DC and Marvel officially licensed a series of winter coats for fun.com, designed for men, but that doesn’t have to stop you. Find a cosplaying friend with great sewing and alteration skills! But, I think Musterband has them beat with their Zelda collection, which is all the forest elf fashion one needs for the approaching colder months. (Also, while you are there, you might as well look around at all the fabulously designed geek knitwear from the German fashion brand. They really get everyday geek cosplay.) To keep your toes warm, you might try these Star Wars Moon Boots (I’m not going to make a Hoth joke. It’s too easy!), which will be coming to ModCloth soon! Or this Kamala Khan inspired hoodie! Or this Wonder Woman rain jacket! And finally, if you want to get a jump start on your Christmas sweater collection, there are these. Couple it with your very own official (BBC approved) knitted Dr. Who scarf, based on the Fourth Doctor. Seriously, you should be all set for winter.

Finally, I leave you without some more geek-inspired bags to your collection, because you needed them right?

Let’s All Feel Pretty!

Ever since WWAC Education & Libraries Editor, Kate Tanski, gave me my own nail wraps from Espionage Cosmetics, I’ve become a little obsessed with nail art. If you are, too, you should check out this site PiggieLuv.com. It has lots of good horror themed stuff for the holidays! Make-up brushes that look like wands, which brings a whole meaning to the magic of make-up, and these highlighters from Bitter Lace Beauty. Cat-themed beauty products for those of us who prefer our cats to most humans in our lives. Currently, I am obsessing over this geode inspired lip art from make-up artist Johannah.

The Real Reason You Are Here: Costumes & Cosplay

shiki-sailor-moon-kylo-ren-cosplay-costume via fashionably geekFirst of all, cosplayer Shiki has won my heart with their creation of a Sailor Moon Kylo Ren costume! Personally, I think Adam Driver would look great on this, because like the Sailor Moon gals, he has legs that go on for days.

If you are still vibing on Stranger Things, PopSugar has a great video on creating some fairly simple costumes for Eleven, Dustin, and Barb (dead or alive). If you want to go even creepier on the dead Barb thing, then there’s a whole make-up tutorial for just that. Or, hey, why not traumatize the children of your neighborhood with this Stranger Things Demogorgon make-up cosplay – go big or go home, I say.

Now that we have a nice dose of that, let’s turn to brighter things, like this ADORABLE KIDDO DRESSED UP AS HOLTZMANN FOR HALLOWEEN!

For more kid cuteness from geek parents (not to mention mad construction skills), here’s some more GhostbustersET, and Luke Skywalker on a tauntaun. Finally, for those of you with pets, you can make your own costumes for them, too, with these superhero crochet masks!

To end this special edition of Geek Mystique, here’s a great cosplay cover of Sally’s Song from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
