Previously on Comics: Award Nominees Announced, But Also Distressing X-Men ’97 Drama

Previously, On Comics banner

Hello and happy Monday from your Friendly, Neighbourhood Previously Editor! I’ve got a short and quick round-up of recent news.

The nominees for the Harvey Awards have been announced. Popverse has the full list but here are some highlights. Witch Hat Atelier, a WWAC favourite, has been nominated in the Best Manga nominations. I recently enjoyed reading Okinawa by Susumu Higa, another Manga nominee, and Rachel Smythe’s Lore Olympus, a Digital Book of the Year nominee and past winner in that category. Congratulations to all the nominees!

The Ignatz Awards have announced their nominees, as well. Here’s the complete list of nominees on the Small Press Expo site. CosmoKnights Book Two by Hannah Templer has been nominated in the Outstanding Series category. We at WWAC are bonafide fans of the series. Read Masha’s review of CosmoKnights here. Fun fact: Jillian and Mariko Tamaki’s Roaming has been nominated for both the Ignatz and the Harvey Awards. Congratulations to all Ignatz nominees!

A Belladonna of Sadness artbook is now being crowdfunded. Kuni Fukai, who worked as a painter and art producer on the film, has shared the news on Instagram.

Now on to the unpleasant stuff. There’s been a lot of speculation since the first season of X-Men ’97 released this year about why showrunner and writer Beau DeMayo was dropped from the show in the run-up to the release. Both DeMayo and Marvel have come out with their own versions of events, and it’s disturbing, to say the least. Hollywood Reporter has a rundown of events and a statement from Marvel that says their investigation found ‘egregious’ behaviour.

In more TV news, multiple arrests have been made in connection with the death of Friends actor Matthew Perry. More news is unfolding with regards to this story.

I hate to leave you on such a dour note. Please do take care of yourselves and if the news is too heavy, you’re allowed to avoid it. Drink lots of water, take moments to rest. I’ll be back soon with more news.
