Hi friends, there is kind of a lot to get through this week and it’s not all good. Some of it is, but some of it sucks so keep that in mind as you move forward.
Comic’s legend George Perez has become the first comic book artist to have their portrait included in the National Portrait Gallery. The portraits, by Steve Cook, DC’s Director of Design, were accepted into the collection in December 2023 and can be seen in their archives.
Award winning Iranian cartoonist and activist Atena Farghadani has been sentenced to six years in prison for ‘insulting the sacred’ and ‘propaganda against the Islamic Republic’. Farghadani was previously imprisoned for her works which criticized birth control laws and members of parliament, and for hanging political caricatures near the presidential palace. The executive director of the Centre for Human Rights in Iran has called on the international arts community to demand her immediate release.
Adult Swim had ordered two new animated shows based on comics, Get Jiro by the late Anthony Bourdain, Joel Rose, and Langdon Foss and Super Mutant Magic Academy by Jillian Tamaki. My Adventures with Superman will also be getting a third season. I don’t have any details on when they will air yet so let’s just say coming soon on MAX.
Comics YouTuber Ben Potter, better known as Comicstorian, has sadly passed away following a tragic accident. His wife Nathalie, along with the Comicstorian team hope to continue his work in order to uphold his dreams and honour their very own superhero.
Our friends at The Comics Journal have taken the time to speak with cartoonist Miriam Libicki regarding the VanCAF situation. They provide a great overview of the situation and provide some useful context if you haven’t been following along with this story over the last few weeks.
