Previously on Comics: A Breather

Good morning. As you read this I will likely be repairing drywall in apartments, so that’s a fun new skill to be learning. Let’s talk about comics!

The weekend before last was the Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men 10th Anniversary party! I made it down to Portland for the live show, and stuck around for the party at Books With Pictures later on. It was a lot of fun; BWP has posted some pictures from the party over on their Instagram. I won’t spoil the subject of the live episode ahead of its release; all you need to know is that it’s one of the most infamous X-Men stories of all time.

It was a nice event to attend, not just for the history (strange to think I’ve been listening to this podcast since the beginning), but also because it was nice to celebrate something in comics for a change. The last few weeks have been fraught, with multiple deaths in the industry due to age, disease, and plain foolishness, and I won’t lie, those have had me feeling frayed.

Speaking of both comics anniversaries and comics deaths, did you know the 40th anniversary of Terra’s death in Teen Titans is this week? Weird milestone, but we have a pretty good essay about it coming.

Also, don’t forget, Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 4th this year, which coincides with Marvel Corporate Holiday™ May the Fourth, a bit of synergy I’m sure the suits love. As ever, PLEASE remember to spend actual money in your friendly local comic book store! Those comics may be free for you, but they aren’t for the stores, and the point of the day is to get customers in the door!

This past week has, thankfully, been a relatively quiet one on the comics front. I think we all needed the break, for the above-mentioned reasons. It does make writing a new column a little hard though, you know? Ah well. Take care of yourselves, and each other, please. That’s all I got.
