Previously on Comics: Mini-grants, Jezebel Lives, and Bonkers Readers

Hey everyone. It’s been a while, but your Friendly Neighbourhood Previously Editor has been here and keeping an eye on all the entertainment and pop culture news. Understandably, multiple ongoing wars continue to be the major news focus, so this Previously is a round-up of a few weeks’ worth of news.

The big news is that December is here! Aka the holiday season, aka a festive time to be spent with family. Lest we forget, it’s also a very tough time for a lot of people, so let’s all keep that in mind during our holiday interactions.

On to some news. ICYMI, Comixology, once the go-to comic book app, is a shadow of its former self, and now Amazon is merging it with Kindle. This is good news, in a way, because Comixology technically lives on, but it doesn’t change the fact that Comixology is now very different from what readers used to love about it.

The Cartoonist Coop is doing its part to help the people of Gaza. They’ve started a donation drive where people can donate eSims to Gazans and get an art piece in exchange. Learn more on their website.

For US comics creators, the Comics Advocacy Group has launched their first mini grant. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2024. You can apply on the CAG website.

Early November, Jezebel, the online feminist magazine, announced it was closing. Now, it seems that Jezebel is getting a new lease on life. Paste Magazine is buying Jezebel, reports the Associated Press. We live in hope!

In bizarre and disturbing news, a young woman is trying to shut down Scholastic because reading a book with “a single kiss” led to a porn addiction. This unbelievable story is being pushed by right-wingers (big surprise), none of whom are talking about the fact that the woman also works for a Scholastic competitor (one wonders why). Popular Information has a break down on all the weirdness.

Despite the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes this year, it looks like somethings aren’t changing for the better. Doctor Who has moved to Disney+ and as a result, British writers on the show are being given an upfront fee instead of smaller fees and residuals, reports Deadline. Ellie Peers, General Secretary of the Writers Guild of Great Britain, shared her disappointment, saying, “the terms outlined to us by Deadline, if true, would represent a serious retrograde step for UK writers working on Doctor Who.” Deep, sad sigh.

Not very happy news, I know. Though there isn’t all that much joy to share right now, cherish the good moments when you encounter them. I hope your holiday season brings you brightness and hope. I desperately wish for an end to all these awful wars. That’ll be the best present we can get this year. Take care, stay out of the cold (or the heat!), and take a break from the news when you can. See you in 2024!
