Good morning folks! It’s been a few months since we’ve been doing Previously regularly, and in that time, we’ve been doing a lot of behind-the-scenes updates. Our new interns, Quinn and Sabrina, have been absolutely fantastic, and the updates we have coming down the pipe are going to be a great step into the future for us as an organization. But enough about us; on with the news!
The Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table Community has set up a Discord server! They’re inviting interested folks to join for the sake of discussing comics and industry details in a setting of like minds:
Want a place to chat about comics with other comic and graphic novel loving librarians and industry professionals? Join the GNCRT Discord!
You do not need to be a GNCRT member to come hang out with us. https://t.co/VP2m4oId2V pic.twitter.com/It3yqRVIlZ— ALA Graphic Novels & Comics RT (@libcomix) April 24, 2023
There’s also been some neat news on the Gwenpool front, as the latest issue of Love Unlimited: Gwenpool #47 has revealed that Gwen is asexual! It’s an interesting comic that does some good work exploring one way that asexuality manifests and is navigated by a person in a setting governed by social rules that assume an allosexual stance. It’s nice to see these kinds of updates on a personal note-as you might remember, I have somewhat strong opinions on depictions of sexuality in mainstream superhero comics.
Finally, the big ticket item of last week was the late-week announcement that IDW Entertainment is undergoing some radical restructuring, including a new CEO and the summary employment termination of 39% of its workforce. Over at Popverse, Graeme McMillan has a list of confirmed layoffs from the company, as well as a roundup of other pertinent details. We’ve seen a lot of these sorts of layoffs at various comic publishers over the last few years, and it’s always a pretty scary endeavor. Our best to those affected; may you land on your feet as easily as possible.
A final bit of housekeeping here; the service we use that allows us to post article links to Twitter has recently announced they’ll be suspending that functionality, owing to Twitter’s marked increase of pricing for such things. As such, we’re looking for some sort of work around, but I don’t think it’ll be a surprise to anyone if our presence on Elon Musk’s Hate Machine begins to diminish. As ever, we’ll keep you updated when we have firm plans in place!
Until then, take care of yourselves. You deserve it.
