Previously On Comics: OK School District Pulls Comics from Libraries

Good morning friends! Are you as done with football as I am? Are you ready to sink into some news that doesn’t immediately relate to kicking but might lead you to consider some? Then strap in.

This week the New York Public Library announced their best books of 2022. This year’s adult book list featured ten comics including Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser and Robyn Smith, and The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V and Filipe Andrade. A further twenty four comics and graphic novels were highlighted across the lists for teens and kids.

Conversely, school libraries in one district of Oklahoma were forced to remove over 3000 graphic novels from their shelves after a complaint from one totally normal human regarding Craig Thompson’s award winning autobiography Blankets. While a portion of these books have since been returned the district is continuing to audit its collection to ensure that parents of the young people attending their schools don’t accidently learn that other people not only exist but may experience the world in different ways to them.

That’s all for this week, stay safe out there buds. Til next time.
