I normally hate the phrase “for the fans,” if only because it seems to have been translated into, “it’s rubbish, but die-hards will love it anyway.” That, minus the latter, however, is the only way to describe Saban’s massive plate of red-hot Power Ranger nostalgia that is BOOM!’s Power Rangers Artist Tribute. It won’t mean much to you if you watched one episode once back in the ’90s and never saw it again, but those into the show and lore will lose their minds over it. Me included! Let’s take a tour.
Even the inside covers have a brilliantly nerdy charm. It’s all the Ranger logos all together on one page like the ultimate piece of wrapping paper. It also makes you realize the Alien Rangers really got shafted on the logo design.
Then we come to the introduction by Power Ranger legend Paul Schrier (otherwise known as Bulk) in a surprisingly well-written and emotive piece—what makes it linger is how passionate he seems about it all. In fact, that’s what shines through in this tribute: everyone in this thing, every damn picture feels passionate about Power Rangers.
The art itself is a joy and filled with Power Rangers lore. In particular the helmets of all the sixth rangers (a coveted place in the line up), an incredible SPD team piece and of course every Tommy Oliver suited up page are designed to be big fan pleasers. Every picture seems crafted with love for the original show, the franchise and the characters therein.
It’s Power Rangers 25th Anniversary, for goodness’ sake— it was always going to be self-indulgent. But this hardcover release is self indulgent in the best way. This is not and will never be for non-Ranger fans; it’s not made to be that. It’s a massive slice of chocolate cake with icing and cherries on top, and it knows it, and that’s what makes it so great!
