Get Your .games On Wednesday

It’s Wednesday! What’s on your gaming schedule for the week? Okay okay I don’t really schedule my gaming. Well, except for Dungeons & Dragons on Sunday nights at 9PM EST. Or the Thursday night Telltale Games Batman group play date I have with my friend. Do my plans to put in an hour or two with my troll hunter in World of Warcraft when my kids go to bed count as scheduled gaming? But before I get to my own gaming, let’s see what’s been going on this week with everyone else.

Have you got your .games domain yet?

Several companies have taken advantage of the next online branding trend from Rightside. Now you can access your favourite .com sites with a .games extension instead. Big names like Blizzard Entertainment and Electronic Arts were allowed to pre-register their trademarks early on — Telltale.Games and CoolMath.Games are among my favourites — but anyone, from gaming bloggers and streamers can get in on it now at name.com. I better add .games to my domain collection, you know, in case I get famous.

Mark Mass Effect: Andromeda on your calendars for March 21, 2017

Intrepid BioWare fans who are far more committed to their BioWare obsession than I am have sussed out the possible release date of Mass Effect: Andromeda. It looks like March 21, 2017 is the day I’ll need to book off of work in order to take Brother and Sister Ryder on their galactic exploration.

“From light into being”

With Overwatch being my other gaming obsession of late, I’m very pleased with the news that my favourite character, Symmetra, is under review for some much needed buffs. Defensively, she’s pretty powerful, but her usage tends to be highly situational. “She’s one of our least-played heroes,” says game director Jeff Kaplan in a Business Insider interview, “[but] you have to read the stats with a little grain of salt there: She’s a hero who’s very situational and she actually gets played a fair bit, but she gets switched off of. What happens commonly is players will play her on defense on the first part of a point, and then when they’ve lost that point, then they’ll switch off of Symmetra. So, that definitely impacts her play time when you’re looking at the stats.” Players are unlikely to see changes to the support character until November, but after that, I’m sure I’ll be seeing way more of this in my future:

“If you’re not watching this on a 4K screen, find one and come back”

That was the introduction to Mass Effect: Andromeda’s recent game play video. I personally do not take orders from YouTube videos and decided to watch the game play anyway, despite my lack of 4K-ness, but if you’re still searching, PC World has everything you need to know — from pricing to performance — to get you all set for the next generation of high definition gaming. The good news, for those of us who need to watch our wallets, is that pricing for this new technology has already come down, sort of… But hold up — CNET says we shouldn’t be so eager to jump on the 4K bandwagon anyway, because games really aren’t ready for the technology, despite developers’ claims.

League of Legends Coming Soon to a Tabletop Near You

Board games have been converted to digital platforms, but now things are moving the other way around. The latest video game to join the world of board games is League of Legends, with Mechs vs. Minions hitting Riot Games’ (riot.games?) website on October 13th. I’ve not played League of Legends yet, but I’d consider playing the board game — if only I could find a nice local group of tabletop gamers to hang out with. I’m sure they are around, but I tend to cling to my online gaming group. Playing face-to-face games with my best gaming buddies is definitely on my bucket list, and I’m glad the variety of tabletop offerings continues to expand.
