Incredible Indie Tuesday: Kickstart All the Comics

Hi everyone! My name is KM, and I’m takin’ over this ship. You’ll still get your weekly dose of indie comics goodness, you just might see a bit more about webcomics and self-published comics because I spend too much time on the internet.

But enough about that. Let’s talk comics!

This month has seen a lot of excellent comic Kickstarters. Last week, Annie Stoll (Ode), and Kevin Jay Stanton (FEZZINE) raised nearly $300,000 for the stunning three volume feminist anthology 1001 Knights. The anthology features the work of over 250 artists, and will be available for non-backers to purchase directly from the artists sometime this summer. Spike C Trotman, founder and editor of Iron Circus Comics, also wrapped up the Smut Peddler Double-Header Kickstarter last week, raising $160,000. Trotman’s ninth campaign funded the publication of Yes, Roya, ICC’s first full-length graphic novel; My Monster Boyfriend, the third volume of Smut Peddler and ICC’s first full-color anthology; and a second printing of Smut Peddler 2012, which has been out of print for several years.

If you need more comic anthologies in your life and didn’t get a chance to back Smut Peddler or 1001 Knights, Other Side Press and Rosy Press have some great projects for you. The Other Side: An Anthology of Queer Paranormal Romance is the first publication of Other Side Press, a new comics publisher founded by Melanie Gilman (As the Crow Flies) and Kori Michele Handwerker (Prince of Cats, Dovetail). In addition to stories from Gilman and Handwerker, the anthology also features the work of Hannah Krieger, Sarah Winifred Searle, Kate Leth, Sfé R. Monster, and more! Meanwhile, Rosy Press, a publisher of romance comics that was successfully Kickstarted last year, is currently funding a special print edition of Fresh Romance, the critically-acclaimed digital romance comic. Janelle Asselin, founder of Rosy Press, recently partnered with Oni Press to secure a wider distribution for future issues of Fresh Romance and other projects. Oni will be publishing an edition of the anthology, but the special edition currently being Kickstarted will only be available to backers.

Finally, Mildred Louis, writer and artist of the webcomic Agents of the Realm is Kickstarting a 300 page, full-color anthology that collects the first five chapters of her popular magical girl webcomic. The campaign is fully funded, and will close tomorrow morning. If you wanna throw your dollars in for some exclusive goodies, now’s the time!

In other indie comics news:

The second Beyond anthology is open for submissions! After successfully funding Beyond: The Queer Sci-fi/Fantasy Comic Anthology last year, creators Sfé R. Monster (Eth’s Skin) and Taneka Stotts (Love & Sprockets, Full Circle) have announced a second volume focusing on urban fantasy and post-apocalyptic fiction.

The Nib will be back to satisfy all your political comic needs. In his most recent newsletter, Matt Bors announced that The Nib, formerly hosted on Medium, will now be distributed by First Look Media as “an independent daily publication and newsletter.”

I have spent way too much time playing with this digital paper doll by Kate Beaton.
