DC Daily Planet: How Bizarre, How Bizarro

Happy Friday everyone!

News on all fronts has slowed down for all corners of the DCU this week, which is a little unexpected as DC usually grabs the week of the 15th to public their new solicits. This is especially anxiety inducing for me given the last round of solicits teased big issue 50 “back to basics” status quo changing issues for most of DC’s current big name titles. I talked about those solicits, and my nerves surrounding them, a couple of weeks ago.

Basically, I’m waiting with baited breath to see what the real fallout the post-issue 50 world is going to be. Will titles be canceled? Will creative teams be swapped around? Hopefully we’ll know more by next week.

In news from the TV corner of the DCU, Legends of Tomorrow (which is right around the corner! It premiers on the 21st!) confirmed that it will include an appearance by Jonah Hex. Now, I’m not a particularly huge Jonah fan or anything, but I am excited about an Old West episode because people being miserable and awkward in ten gallon hats and chaps and spurs is something that will always be funny to me.

The more news like this that comes out, the more excited I get for Legends. And I promise it’s not just because Captain Cold is my favorite character from CW’s Flash.

(It’s totally because Captain Cold is my favorite character from CW’s Flash.) (Captain Cold should be everyone’s favorite character in CW’s Flash, thank you very much.)

And speaking of new character appearances on  TV shows, Supergirl has officially announced that Hope Lauren will be playing Bizarro Girl, a long time rogue of Kara’s, in an upcoming episode.

Here’s what executive producer Andrew Kreisberg had to say about the episode in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

The biggest thing about it that was a surprise for us as we constructed the character and the arc was how sad Bizzaro is. In a way, we sort of think about her like Frankenstein[’s monster]. She’s a monster, but she has a pure child’s heart. Ironically, in the episode, while everyone else is saying, ‘We have to figure out a way to destroy her,’ Kara is the only one saying, ‘No, no, no, we have to save her.’ That makes the episode so emblematic of what’s so special about Kara. She’s looking to save everybody, even if they’re the bad guy.

It seems like the Superman/Supergirl fandoms are a bit Bizarro-crazy at the moment because this announcement is happening almost simultaneously with a big (unsubstantiated) rumor that we might be seeing the Man of Steel’s own Bizarro alter ego in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film.

Personally, I feel like that’s pretty unlikely, but who knows?

In more Batman vs. Superman news, director Zack Snyder appeared on Conan this week and debuted a new clip of the film. It’s… Well. Take a look.

I try not to be too outright negative about this movie because I do want it to be good, but clips like this inspire exactly zero confidence in me. “Consider this mercy”? Or what, Clark? Why? What’s the deal with all this macho posturing?

I’m willing to buy a movie about some pretty profound ideological differences driving a wedge between Clark and Bruce. Sure. But these clips and trailers are skewing less “ideological differences” and more “frat party chest thumping contest”.

No thank you.

And finally, in even more CW news: Kevin Smith has been confirmed to direct an upcoming episode of Flash, which returns from it’s mid-season hiatus on January 19th, and the animated mini-show Vixin, which airs on the streaming service CW Seed has been picked up for a second season. Here’s hoping we’ll get episodes that are more than just five or ten minutes long this time.
