Drink Your Comics: Girl Groups in Comics

Well, it’s the holidays which can be simultaneously exciting and stressful. What better way to relax than with a cocktail inspired by great girl groups in comics? Among Paper Girls, Zodiac Starforce, Jem & the Holograms, Lumberjanes, and the original (magical) girl group: Sailor Moon, there’s a lot of inspiration to choose from. So kick back and give yourself a breather with one of our refreshing concoctions.

Zodiac Starforce, Kevin Panetta (script) and Paulina Ganucheau (art)Zodiac ShotsForce by Al Rosenberg

Each of the Star Signs have unique tastes and should be honored for what they bring to the fight and the palette.

  • Cinnamon-flavored whisky
  • Curaçao
  • Elderflower liquor
  • Grapefruit juice
  • Grenadine
  • White rum

Line up four shot glasses as a flight, perhaps share with friends to avoid a cosmic hangover.

Shot 1: Aries

Cinnamon-flavored whisky. Hot-headed and aggressive, shoot this first to start off strong.

Shot 2: Taurus

Mix White rum and grenadine. This determined sign will cool your mouth from Aries.

Shot 3: Gemini

Stir together grapefruit juice and elderflower liquor. Sweet and sour, fun in your mouth.

Shot 4: Pisces

Mix up Curaçao and that white rum. The final sign of the zodiac and final shot of the night, ocean-blue and just as refreshing.

Cat Scratch Punch by Jennie Law

Josie, Melody, and Valerie popped onto the Archie Comics scene in 1963 courtesy of Dan DeCarlo. The misadventures of this all-girl band run the gamut from goofy (going to outerspace) to creepy (being trapped on an island by a diabolical Svengali type dude). No matter the circumstances, Josie, Melody, and Val always manage to come out on top through the use of their talents (practicality, obliviousness, and fortitude respectively) and a huge amount of girl group teamwork. This drink honors the time they were actually turned into cats by mystical forces! Enjoy!

  • 3 Stylish but practical cat suits
  • 3 Sets of perky cat ears
  • 1 cup rum
  • 14 cup Southern Comfort
  • 14 cup almond liqueur
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 14 cup grenadine
  • 3 limes, juiced

Put on a cat suit and set of ears. Pour all liquids into a pitcher and stir. Serve in pitcher with three straws or portioned out into individual water bowls. For garnish use lime slices, pineapple slices, cherries, and peppy pop music!

Gin Candy Fizz by Christa Seeleychristas DYC

Inspired by The Candy Hearts from Band vs Band by Kathleen Jacques. The Candy Hearts (also known as Cherry Cola, Honey Hart, Zero, and Coco) are a sugar sweet band who believe in “love, world peace, and ice cream sodas” and out playing/crushing on their rivals the Sourballs. Given their sugar sweet attitude, it only makes sense that this drink should share that quality. But in honour of the Sourballs, I’ve given it a bit of a twist as well.

  • 1 part gin
  • 1 part cran-cherry juice (or cran-raspberry if you prefer)
  • Soda water
  • Sour candy (Warheads work great)

Mix together 1 part gin and 1 part cran-cherry juice (You can also use cran-raspberry, but trust me, cran-cherry is best). Fill the rest of the glass with ice and soda water. Sit back and enjoy with a handful of super sour candies.

Failed Attempt by Ginnis Tonik

Usually for DYC, I tell my partner in crime the theme and some concepts for a general cocktail. I kept mentioning sparkly which led us down the road of Goldschlagger. Having had too many memories of Goldschlagger in reverse in high school, I quickly nipped that idea in the bud. The next thing we found that was supposedly sparkly was Viniq, a blended drink. I was suspicious, and my suspicions were confirmed. Don’t buy that shit; it is not sparkly, and it is too sweet, but if you do, here’s a cocktail to make it more palatable.

  • half of a medium orange, juiced
  • half of a large lemon, juiced
  • 1/2 tsp. granulated sugar
  • 3 oz. Viniq
  • Sparkling wine, preferably a drier one like Prosecco

Mix the orange juice, lemon juice, sugar, and Viniq. Fill half a champagne flute with mix. Top the glass off with sparkling wine. It will look the color of swamp water, but it will actually taste pretty good.
