Mighty Marvel Monday: All-New, All-Different Edition

Mighty Marvel Monday: All-New, All-Different Edition!

I know I promised that this week I would catch you all up on the new All-New, All-Different Marvel titles and other comics news, but the official Jessica Jones trailer came out on Friday.

I have to take a moment to reiterate my absolute excitement about this series, about Luke and Jessica, and a gentle reminder for people remember to tag for abuse, rape, violence, suicidal imagery, and such in their discussions of the series as it is already present (or hinted at) in the trailer.

Now, on to the comics!

The big diversity agenda being pushed right now in Marvel is women. Women, women, women. People are Marveling at the 17 titles headlined by women. People even got into the frenzy, getting an exclusive with four new covers:

However, the article also included this slightly disturbing passage about why Jessica Drew is pregnant:

One character in particular, Jessica Drew in Spider-Woman, recently underwent a major change in the form of motherhood – a decision that was made following the birth of Marvel writer Dennis Hopeless’ first child.

“He had developed such an amazement and respect for his wife,” says Sana Amanat, Director of Content and Development at Marvel Entertainment, of the inspiration behind Drew’s pregnancy.

“You’re talking about the strongest characters out there, people out there – you have to talk about mothers,” says Amanat. “They are the strongest women.”

I am super happy Marvel is embracing women as mothers, and mothers while superheroes, but they might want to tone down the rhetoric after that whole uncomfortable moment in Avengers: Age of Ultron where Black Widow called herself a monster because she had a forced hysterectomy and people reacted. Badly. We even wrote about it.

Moving on–

The other large, slightly controversial announcement was this report that Marvel plans on creating Chinese comic book characters. Whether this is pandering to a specific demographic which presumes that people can only identify with characters of their own nationality, or a progressive move intended in the spirit of understanding that seeing people like yourself, including nationality, represented in media is important seems to be the main point of contention, but to me, this seems not like a situation of either/or, but a situation of both/and, and one I’m more pleased to see than anything else. I don’t care if corporations are motivated by money to make diversity happen so long as diversity happens.

Finally!

The time for previews is over, Secret Wars is over (sort of), and if, like me, you were confused before about what titles are coming out when, you are even more confused now when we have some series wrapping up, and other series restarting, and even more series waiting to start.

Luckily, Marvel has a calendar! I actually did not know this existed before I went looking to try to make sense of what was happening, although the one drawback is that they only show you the current week and future weeks, and not weeks past. I guess that’s what Comixology is for.

All-New All-Different series to check out this week:

  • The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1
  • Angela: Queen of Hel #1
  • Uncanny Inhumans #1
  • Spider-Gwen #1

All-New All-Different series you might have missed:

  • Captain America: Sam Wilson #1
  • New Avengers #1
  • Uncanny Avengers #1

ICYMI

The Marvel Cinematic Phase 2 Box Set seems like something only a diehard collector would buy–but apparently Hayley Atwell recorded some cast commentary for the Agent Carter oneshot that was, in many ways, a pilot for the Agent Carter series.

So…how long before this ends up on YouTube?
