I can’t pretend that I think the second installment in the Divergent series is going to be a quality movie, but, well, I’m looking forward to it anyway. Divergent had all kinds of problems (um, what was the message of that movie anyway?), but I sat there mesmerized for the entire thing. I didn’t care that the whole segmented, utopian society thing is far from new in science fiction, nor that the five factions into which individuals are divided relies pretty heavily on stereotypes. In this instance, I slammed the door on my inner doubts because all I wanted was eye candy. I really enjoyed watching Kate Winslet play the antagonist—a role she’ll reprise in Insurgent—and I had fun chuckling at the somewhat forced on-screen chemistry between main characters Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James).

I expect more of the same engrossing fluff from Insurgent: crazy action sequences, a murky plot, barely believable character motivation, awkward attempts at diversity, and gratuitous awesomeness. Our hero Tris has officially broken free of the faction system and is heading out into the great unknown (aka the supposed wasteland beyond their city’s boundaries) with her fellow rebels. I honestly don’t know what they’re going to do out there, or how they’re going to return to conflict with the city’s manipulative leaders, but to be perfectly honest I don’t really care. I’m just looking forward to eating popcorn and watching another train wreck of a movie.

I love the Divergent series for the same reason I hated the Twilight series: it’s shallow junk food that will satisfy your taste buds but give you a stomachache immediately thereafter. But hey, at least the Divergent series doesn’t trample all over my beloved vampire-human-werewolf love triangle trope.

I’m not a Disney fanatic, but I do love a good Cinderella story, and this one has the potential to be good on casting alone.

No, I don’t mean Lily James as Cinderella.

I mean Cate Blanchett as Cinderella’s wicked stepmother, Derek Jacobi as the King, Helena Bonham-Carter as the Fairy Godmother, Stellan Skarsgård as the Grand Duke, Hayley Atwell as Cinderella’s (dead) mother, and of course, Robb Stark Richard Madden as Prince Charming.

Honestly, they had me at Cate Blanchett.
