Genesis Rodriguez, Haley Joel Osment, and Justin Long

Demarest Films

I . . . don’t know what to think about this movie. When I saw the first part of the trailer, I thought it might just be a spoof of something, maybe? I mean, I can’t take Justin Long seriously. And then I got drawn into it, thinking I must be wrong, this movie can’t really be aboutmaking a dude into a walrus? Wait. Really?

I have no shame. I will rent this movie and watch it with friends while drinking copiously, as Kevin Smith no doubt intended.

Jorge R. Gutierrez

Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, Danny Trejo

20th Century Fox

This movie is inspired by the Mexican Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. I was concerned when I first heard about that: worried about appropriation. But I heard recently that Jorge R. Gutierrez is the guy who was behind the Nickelodeon animated series El Tigre The Adventures of Manny Rivera, and the creator and his team are Mexican themselves, which means the subject matter will be treated with respect. The animation I’ve seen so far is splendid and unique.

Wes Ball

Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster

20th Century Fox

I haven’t read this book series and I don’t know much about the plot other than it being about a group of teen boys who live in a place called “The Glade” surrounded by the titular maze and they have no memory of how they got there. That’s intriguing enough to pique my interest. And judging from the trailer there are runners who go into the maze every day to look for a way outbut if they stay there too long there are creatures that will kill them. All of that sounds very interesting but the real reason I want to see this movie is that Dylan O’Brien is the star. And that cute kid from Love Actually is in it too. But mostly because of Dylan O’Brien. Judge all you want, I make no apologies.

Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Sally Field

Paramount Pictures

What’s that you say? Forrest Gump isn’t a new release? Oh, sure we’ve all seen the journey from leg braces to war to boxes of chocolate at bus stops, but have we seen it IN IMAX? That’s right folks: this September I have yet another excuse to rave about how I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is, and I love this movie. Now, Mama always said you gotta put your past behind you so you can move on, but I’m sure happy I get to relive this little piece of my past.

Shawn Levy

Tina Fey, Jane Fonda, Jason Bateman, Adam Driver

Warner Bros.

I have no idea if this movie is going to be any good. The trailers left me worried. For instance, Tina Fey’s character tells her brother that he “needs to put a baby in that woman,” when talking about her sister-in-law and Jane Fonda’s breasts seem to be part of a running joke. Plus, Director Shawn Levy is best known for Night at the Museum and is the Executive Producer for Last Man Standing, and the whole cast seems to be white and hetero. But I am willing to be proven wrong. So, I will be watching this film, wishing with my fingers crossed that it will be worth it, because it’s based on a decent book and I love Tina Fey and Adam Driver.

Stephen Beresford

Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, Dominic West

The movie is based on the story of a group of UK gay and lesbian activists that helped a mining community in the 1984 mining strike. The cast looks phenomenal and the writing in the trailer seems sharp. Also, like Playboy proved with their Should You Catcall Her guide, laughter can go a long way towards easing the way for education.

My Little Pony: The Complete Series (Original)

Warren Batchelder

Bettina Bush, Susan Blue

Shout! Factory

The original MLP TV series in its entirety is finally being released on DVD on September 30! I first learned the art of hooky just so I could stay home and watch episodes of MLP during the weekday. These were the days when the MLPs were cute, chubby ponies – not the svelte ones of today. I may play adult hooky just to binge watch the entire thing.
