Melding his love of games and his woodworking skills, Hunter Montgomery wants to create pixelated video game coasters for video game fans everywhere.

Mario Coaster by Hunter MontgomeryThe Video Games Coasters Kickstarter aims to bring four of Hunter’s designs to life using various hardwoods to achieve the different colors. That’s right, he’s not staining them;  he’s using the natural color of the wood. For example, his Mario design is made from Hickory (creamy white), Cherry (light pinkish brown), Oak (golden brown), Padauk (red), and Wenge (black).

Fun fact: Ever since I first laid eyes on the Studiolo from the Ducal Palace in Gubbio at the Met, I feel love for the woodworking technique intarsia, a method of inlaying wood with other wood to make a mosaic picture, instead of painting. So for me, his use of colored hardwood adds an extra layer of coolness.

Also intriguing is the “pixel” size on each coaster. One coaster is approximately 3-1/2 inches by 3-1/2 inches with 17 by 17 grid meaning there are a total of 289 little squares.

Backer rewards start at $15 for one coaster turned magnet up to $440 for a coaster-topped coffee table. The $45 level gets four coasters of your choice and a handy holder.
