Decades before Archie gave us a multiversal peek into a world where its titular hero finally picked between Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, the original “Archie Chooses” storyline is coming back to print.
Archie: Love Showdown features Archie finally deciding to pick between his two sweethearts. Combat sets in, as Veronica and Betty try to do anything they can to get his attention. But might a third spoiler in the form of Cheryl Blossom end up winning Archie’s heart instead?
“Cheryl had been a favorite of mine since her first appearance in the early ‘80s. Dan felt the same way. Like many other additional Archie characters, she had faded into the background over the following years. In the mid-‘90s it seemed like a great time to bring her back for a new decade. The higher ups at Archie Comics wanted something to get attention and headlines after all the excitement over DC’s ‘Death of Superman’ storyline a couple of years earlier. Dan and I presented the idea of Archie finally making a decision on a girlfriend. As Betty and Veronica competed for Archie’s ultimate affection here came the hook: Cheryl returns and, well, no spoilers!” said fellow series writer Bill Golliher.
Archie: Love Showdown features writing from Parent, Golliher and George Gladir. It also sports art from Parent, Dan DeCarlo, and ink, colors and letters from various contributors.
