Shinbun Saturday: Studio Ghibli Adapts the World’s Oldest Manga

It’s Angel here with your manga news, as Vernieda is off on a lovely writing retreat! The first post-Daylight Savings week is always a challenge, but I’ve got some interesting news bits that might perk you right up.

Continuing their tradition of sharing beautiful stories, Studio Ghibli has announced their adaptation of the world’s oldest manga Choju Jinbutsu Giga into a short commercial. Choju Jinbutsu Giga is a set of picture scrolls from the 12th century, featuring animals scampering across the scrolls. It’s 30 seconds of delightful and lively art that’s sure to charm anyone who watches it.

Speaking of animation, Dark Horse will be bringing Danganronpa: The Animation to North America in March 2017. Danganronpa is a fairly recent hit, having debuted in a 2013 issue of Shounen Ace, but the response to the English release has been rather positive. Game developer Spike Chunsoft has already begun work on a third installment in the game series.

We’re only six days away from the second Ansatsu Kyoshitsu (Assassination Classroom) movie, and fans of the manga have something else to look forward to, thanks to Shounen Jump! Four weeks’ worth of new manga chapters are scheduled to be released in the magazines’ upcoming issues, what I’m sure is welcome news to readers who will have to bid goodbye to Korosensei and the kids of Class 3E in the final issue of the manga today, March 19.

In the extra manga chapters, readers will learn about Korosensei’s private life outside of the school. If you’d told me last year that I might be even a little interested in an octopus-like alien’s vacation adventures, I might not have believed you. But having seen the first film back in December, I admit I’m a little intrigued. I’ll likely pick up the manga after I watch the sequel later this year, so no spoilers for those extra chapters please!

Have a great week everyone!
