Mighty Marvel Monday: Bits & Bobs

Welcome to another Mighty Marvel Monday: Bits & Bobs Edition.

I have to start off this week with an apology. I spend a good amount of time each Sunday night sorting through the Marvel news for things that I find interesting or that I hope other people will find interesting, and some weeks I just come up short.

Like this week.

In the past I’ve taken advantage of slow Marvel news weeks to write things like A Paeon to G. Willow Wilson and A Long Goodbye for Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye, but this week I just don’t have the energy.

I’m sorry, readers. I hope next week is better.

For now, here’s what I’ve got:

I know all the Fannibals are hurting right now, but according to Variety, Hannibal himself, Mads Mikkelsen, is in talks to join the cast of Doctor Strange, which is set to begin shooting this fall. The cast for this movie is fantastically strong, especially in comparison to Ant-Man, but I (and others) have written about why this movie’s whitewashing of the Ancient One (even though they cast Tilda Swinton in the traditionally male role) is problematic, and others have written about why casting Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role is another missed opportunity.

Andrew Garfield demonstrated again why he is my favorite Spider-Man. I’ve written about how Garfield’s incredible love for Spider-Man, the new Peter Parker had mighty big webs to fill in a previous Mighty Marvel Monday. My love for Garfield’s love of Spider-Man continues to grow this week thanks to an interview on Uproxx which informed us that Garfield pushed for Sony and Marvel to reconcile, even though the resulting merger resulted in Amazing Spider-Man 3 being canceled, and worse, he was never in talks to continue as Peter Parker in the MCU. My heart. It’s like the scene with the eggs all over again.

One last link. I’ve highlighted other comics commentary and histories on other sites before, and this week, this article from io9 came across my dash: The Unfortunate and Obscure History of Monica Rambeau, the First Female Captain Marvel. I’m always happy to see articles like this, especially in anticipation of the relaunching/rebranding this fall, which, as the article points out, includes Monica Rambeau with another recent missing WOC, America Chavez.

This also seems like a good time to remind people about the first Captain America, Isaiah Bradley and our review of Truth: Red, White & Black, and to remind people that his grandson, Eli Bradley, is still MIA.

Dubsmash Wars for Charity is almost upon us! The competition starts September 2nd and I cannot wait to see the videos these two teams have planned. You can find all the details about the grand prize (a trip to Hollywood to have lunch with James D’arcy, Hayley Atwell, Chloe Bennet, and Clark Gregg!) on their crowdrise page.
