Kickstarter of the Week: The Riveter

The Riveter is an online publication that aims to provide higher quality long form media for women. Started in 2013 by Kaylen Ralph and Joanna Demkiewicz, The Riveter started as a way to fill gaps in print media targeting women. These women, along with Natalie Cheng, who joined the team in 2014, noticed a disturbing lack of challenging, intellectual content in women’s media. They aim to create a new kind of women’s magazine, one that deals with universal women’s issues in a thoughtful, compelling manner.

Though The Riveter is already flourishing online, Ralph, Demkiewicz, and Cheng are determined to bring a print edition to their loyal subscribers. They have printed two “beta issues” since the inception of The Riveter, and they have sold out of every single one. It seems the demand for a hard copy of their magazine certainly exists, so they launched this Kickstarter to make it a reality.

With a nearly-funded goal of $33,000 USD, it seems likely they will succeed. The Riveter is to be a quarterly publication, and the team has encouraged anyone interested in subscribing to donate to the Kickstarter, as this is the best way to guarantee you will receive all four issues of the magazine. Almost every level of donation includes an edition of the first issue, though you have to contribute at least $60 to get a full print subscription. Upper levels include prints, tshirts, and totes designed by Minneapolis-based illustrator Sarah Julson.

The Riveter has been endorsed by Girls writer Sarah Heyward, Ziwe Fumudoh of The Onion and Reductress, and Hairpin editor Haley Mlotek. This amazing project has almost met its funding goal, but there are only a few days left! The funding period ends on March 15. If this sounds like a cause you can get behind, you can back their Kickstarter here. Even if you don’t, you should absolutely check out their website.
