Incredible Indie Tuesdays: All Image, All the Time

Feature image, public domain,, Full of Fun, Ajax-Farrell

It was the 2015 Image Expo last week, and TONS of new books were announced by some very big names, including Scott Snyder, Brian K. Vaughn, and Darwyn friggin’ Cooke!  We’ve already talked about how excited we are for Monstress, and there is so much more on the horizon.  Rather than doing an exhaustive look, I’ll be hitting the highlights over the next few weeks.

Kaptara has been described as a big gay sci-fi adventure inspired by ’80s action figures and The Island of Doctor Moreau.  I…have no idea how those things fit together, but am excited to find out!  Plus, Chip Zdarsky is totally the best thing about Sex Criminals (sorry, Fraction) so this promises to be fun and hilarious.

Starting in June, Island will be a monthly comic magazine, 60 to 70 pages of shorter works and art from incredible creators like Farel Dalrymple, Michael Deforge, and tons more.  It’s going to be a way to showcase art and creators that don’t do monthly titles, and the whole mini-comics scene is outside the reach of most readers.  Seeing something this big from Image has me absolutely flailing in glee.

This year will also see the release of A.D. After Death, Snyder’s first graphic novel and Lemire’s return to art duties after several writing stints.  The gist is, as the title describes, what happens to a world where death has been cured.  It’ll be interesting to see how Snyder’s writing works with Lemire’s distinctive art style, but their non-superhero work has been the best of their career so I have high hopes.

Their six-issue run on Moon Knight was widely praised as some of the best work in 2014, and now the renowned team of writer, artist and colorist are coming together again for a sci-fi ongoing.  The plot details are a little muddy…basically chaos is rumbling on the horizon or something…but the creative team and initial cover are enough to have me pumped.

Catie Coleman

Catie is a lawyer by day, comics fan by night (and during the lunch hour). Unsurprisingly, her idol is She-Hulk and can only wish that she could work a purple suit in the courtroom like Shulkie can. She's also into Stephanie Brown, because she has apparently an affinity for characters in purple.
