Comic Fan Cocktails: Megg’s Molten Tears for Megahex by Simon Hanselmann

As a fan of Simon Hanselmann’s comics, creating a cocktail based on Megg is a sort of wacky indulgence of mine.  I imagine Megg would prefer a simpler drink that doesn’t involve making a pepper simple syrup, but if the mood struck her I think she would love this drink.  Megg’s Molten Tears is a mutated margarita of sorts.  Whether or not it technically qualifies as one is beyond my knowledge (mixologist, clearly, I am not) – there’s no orange liqueur.  The upside though is that the only liquor you need is tequila, which keeps this drink relatively cheap.  This drink could be supersized into a punch bowl version easily – just salt and freeze lots of glasses ahead of time, fill a punch bowl with ice and pour the ingredients in the same order as the video and written instructions below.

Megg’s Molten Tears
Serves 1.

Mountain Dew or Ginger Ale/Beer
(other green sodas like 7-up, green Jarritos, etc. will also work)
2 oz. tequila
2 limes
2 serrano or green spicy peppers
(add more if you like your drink spicy.  I ended up using 6 later)
One cup of white sugar
One cup of water
Kosher or coarse salt
(table salt will work in a pinch, but go easy when you salt the glass)

Serve in: A tall glass (a highball glass/tumbler)

Pour about 2 tablespoons of salt onto a small plate. Wiggle the plate to evenly distribute the salt.  Rinse a tall glass with cold water, then rub the rim into the salt. You can pack more salt on the rim with your fingers to get it the way you like. Place the salted glass in your freezer while you assemble the drink.

Slice the peppers in half lengthwise. Add them to a saucepan with one cup of water and bring to a boil on high heat. Once it boils, cover and boil for 30 minutes, or until the peppers become mushy and the water turns sort of green.  Give the water a taste to see if the spiciness is to your liking (add more peppers if you want it spicier). Once  the peppers are boiled to your liking, turn off the heat and add one cup of sugar. Stir in the sugar until it dissolves entirely.  Strain the pepper syrup mixture into a heat safe container and let it cool entirely.

Juice two limes into a glass and set side.

Take out the now chilled/frozen salted glass and fill with ice.  Pour in the tequila halfway up the glass (about 2 oz.). Add the lime juice. Add about 1/4 cup pepper syrup. Top with Mountain Dew or the soda of your choice.

Enjoy!
