You don’t often have a publisher keep a hype worthy book under wraps for as long as HarperCollins did. The Most Dangerous Animal of All, by Gary L. Stewart, is about the author’s search for his biological father who he alleges to be the Zodiac Killer. The book was published May 13, 2014.

 

LeVar Burton to be recognized with the Impact Award at Gala
I’m tempted to insert a line from the Reading Rainbow opening theme in this post but CNN seems to have beaten me to the punch. Actor and host of the popular kids show, Reading Rainbow (1983-2009), LeVar Burton, will be recognized with the Impact Award for his efforts to instill “a lifelong love of reading in children” at the seventh Children’s Book Week Gala”. Congrats.

Oh No! Teens Aren’t Reading Like They Used To…
According to nonprofit Common Sense Media, teens aren’t reading for fun as much as they used to, with seventeen-year-olds only reading once or twice a year. Keep in mind that the study was a meta-analysis, which means that they didn’t do new research on the topic but looked at pre-existing research done by others.

The studies do not say that kids are reading less because they’re spending more time online. But [Jim] Steyer is convinced that’s at least part of the answer.

Jordan Shapiro does take on the digital affects of reading in response to Common Sense Media’s claims.

Books-A-Millions Gets Into The Ring With Hachette/Amazon Battle
Books-A-Million, a bookstore, gets cheeky with their site by having, “Books-A-Million proudly sells Hachette books,” on their home page and offering up to 40% off new and bestselling HBG titles. This comes after reports of a scuffle over retail terms between Hachette Book Group and Amazon.

  1. I bet teens are reading THIS, right now. Leaving out text-based communication seems wildly misleading in a study like that!
