Original graphic novel: Boxers and Saints, by Gene Luen Yang. It’s a wonderfully complex examination of the difficult realities underlying cultural exchange and the nature of faith, has a deceptively simple art style, and best of all it’s appropriate for teenagers (who, let’s be honest, rarely get this kind of honesty in historical narratives).
