Diversity in comics, both on the page and amongst those creating them, has been at the forefront of comics journalism for the past several years. Highly visible, successful comics that feature diverse subjects and creators have provided hopeful signs of change. Image’s Saga features a woman of color as co-lead, and was co-created by artist…
Portrait of a Comics Journalist in 2014 (1/2)
Through September and October, I did a small survey of comics bloggers and journalists. I had 74 responses from a wide variety of writers. Some are popular, independent bloggers on WordPress and Tumblr. Some work for sites like the Mary Sue or IGN. And some are new bloggers, just finding their feet in the world of…
Cats in Cardigans: London Illustration Fair 2014
Frances covered Lush’s Sandlewood Smugglers launch for us so well that we sent her out again. Do you have an indie comics, illustration, otherwise WWAC-friendly event coming up in London? Let us know! It’s bloody freezing in London at the moment, and the woodland animals of the city’s illustration scene are very sensibly wearing their warmest…

EYES ON THE PRIZE: How to get new and youthful punters to approach your table, as an art-man working largely before the current generation could even read! Some creators find it easy — gaining fans, treating them well, and improving the social side of the industry as they get new, excited eyes on the goods that…
The End is not Nigh: Arts and Arts Industries Aren’t Dying
Look up. That’s the Orion Nebula, a site of massive star formation. It’s certainly dramatic. Some bright points of light. Huge clouds of dust colliding. Who knows what will come out of it? Well, we do know. Stars are what’s coming, big and small. Imagine that’s an arts industry. Pick one, any will do. Ok, we’ll go with publishing. What was…
Adobe Withdraws Accidental Support of #GamerGate
Last week — JFC, was it only last week?! — Adobe accidentally endorsed GamerGate. Or at least, they appeared to be endorsing GamerGate, thanks to a misunderstanding on the part of Adobe’s social media team and some pretty impressive spin from GamerGaters. Back when GamerGate was trying to salt and burn the Gawker network over claims that…

Dear Mr. Manara, You remember the Spider-Woman variant cover you drew that’s being discussed all over Twitter and the news sites, right? No? Here’s a refresher: This is the solo Spider-Woman comic that Marvel announced at the Women Of Marvel Panel at San Diego Comic Con and Marvel has been pushing female led titles lately to reflect their growing female audience. It’s…

DRM (Digital Rights Management) has been and remains a hot topic for fans of all kinds, and for content creators of all kinds. Marvel Entertainment Given Invoice By Worker
Marvel Entertainment Sued by Unpaid Intern, you say? On behalf of every comics lover working hard to keep the industry moving, I have a headline of my own to direct at the enormous corporations who spend millions on out of date publicity campaigns and bullshit regression every year: Thank you for your time.
PREVIEWSWorld Blogger’s Sexist Post Not Appreciated By Geek Girls
Last Monday afternoon, an article was posted on PREVIEWSworld.com by Vince Brusio called, “SDCC: A Last Look at the Ladies.” Unfortunately, the tone of the article was quite sexist and leering. It was illustrated with photos that appeared to consist primarily of models hired to wear costumes at booths rather than cosplaying attendees, and included this…
