BOOM! Bar: A Whole Month in One Swoop

The last of October (the week of Wednesday the 25th) was a heavy week in BOOM! Town! Thirteen, count’em, thirteen releases. One hardcover, two softcover collections, and eight ongoing issues. Nine of that thirteen are licensed books. Sisters of Sorrow (full review) and Victor Lavelle’s Destroyer (a hurried finish, but emotionally satisfying and packing a full wallop) both finished up their mini-series publication, with four of four and six of six respectively. Two solid trade prospects, IMO. BOOM! Studios Starting with what I don’t know: licensed comics for shows I don’t watch, helpfully covered by other staffers: In Steven...

BOOM! Bar: God Bless Bill & Ted, Etc

BOOM! Studios Bill & Ted Save the Universe reaches five of five, and is totally perfectly brilliant. Everybody gets their moment, EVERYBODY HEALS, and Wyld Stallyns rock reality. I honestly can’t say enough about how good this is, as a licensed book and as a serial. Every creative element works in good-faith tandem, every important element and character of the original series is freshly used. Magnifique. Give these Joines, Bachan, Guimaraes, Campbell, and cover artist Charm, gold medals. Kong: Gods of Skull Island #1 is a stand alone story, apparently; not sure it it means it’s a stand alone...

If, like me, you prefer adult Lady Croft, a pre-reboot vision of the character (with caveats, naturally), then this is the book for you. The book. Yes, it’s a problem that pre-reboot Croft comics...

Lea & Julius Antoine: A 1980s French Comic About Ephebophilia

Lea: The Confessions of Julius Antoine Serge Le Tendre (writer), Christian Rossi (artist) Fantagraphics, 1989 First published in French by Albin Michel, 1985 This article contains discussions of ephebophilia and paedophilia. I was excited to open this comic. The man on the cover looks so miserable. The weather looks so nice. The art is so European. But ignorance is bliss, reader, isn’t it? The crux of the issue is that I don’t believe this scenario: A fifteen year old girl gets completely naked in the bathroom whilst a male adult family friend–no relation, newly acquainted, regularly teased by his girlfriend...
