American Horror Story Season 6: Hopes, Fears and the Hole Jessica Lange Leaves Behind

I’ve been a loyal but most recently disappointed fan of American Horror Story. Undoubtedly, there is a lot to be celebrated in the series. It showcases characters who are complex and unique in their suffering. Take Jessica Lange’s alcoholic, conniving character Sister Jude from season two; we went from despising her, to understanding her and finally to feeling sorry for her, in the span of one season. That’s perhaps the biggest strength Jessica Lange brought to the ensemble cast, her ability to portray strong, complex, female characters. Sure she was no saint, but she fought against the patriarchal male until her last day (and last role).

In season three, Coven, each witch had their own special power. The show celebrated womanhood: the witches didn’t need a man to protect them and there were no man in a position of power. The thing I love most about each season, and American Horror Story overall, is that while each season has a theme, the tropes and ideas that are explored via character interaction and story are as much about the social processes of our day to day life, as they are about that central theme. Coven wasn’t just about witches but about society’s treatment and fear of women. Freakshow wasn’t just about a circus but the creation of “the other.”

But while Ryan Murphy and the rest of the show’s team have given us a lot, I still felt myself give up on Freakshow halfway and sat through the final few episodes of season five, Hotel, bored. I miss Jessica Lange and I thought Lady Gaga could fill that void inside of me. Perhaps it’s that while getting to know the new ensemble cast I got so lost within what felt like thirty different storylines that I couldn’t truly appreciate Lady Gaga’s character, The Countess. Whatever it was, the hole that Jessica Lange left behind has never been filled.

So we are one day away from the premiere of season six, whose theme has yet to be named. There has been a lot of speculation, The Mist, The Creature from the Lagoon, the Roanoke Colony, the return of the Antichrist child Connie Britton birthed in season one? You can find a full breakdown of some of the theories here.

Ryan Murphy has stated that all seasons are connected and we have revisited past characters, but it would be nice to finally tie up some strings this season. With that antichrist baby who was so devilishly cute maybe?

We know Gaga will again have a major role, but unlike her role as The Countess, who was more worried about money and her lovers, I hope to see a character fighting towards something, and alongside her cast mates. Who doesn’t love a great ensemble cast working towards (some kind of) evil? In addition to Gaga, we know that Finn Witrock, Kathy Bates, Matt Bomer, Cheyanne Jackson, Angela Bassett, Denis O’Hare are on board, and that my personal favorite, Sarah Paulson will return. I hope to see a darker, more organized season with better storylines for all of them.

Ryan Murphy, you’ve got one of the best ensemble casts, let see what kind of trouble they stir up.
