Book Beat: YA Author to Write A Miles Morales Novel

It’s time for book news — and there’s a ton of it. Nicola Yoon’s young adult novel, Everything Everything, is being adapted into a film that’ll be directed by Stella Meghie. They also announced that Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson would be playing the leads which caught my attention as an Amandla fan.

Yoon’s debut novel follows Maddy, a teen who has severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare disease that causes her to be allergic to practically everything. She has spent 17 years hiding out in her home, only seeing her mother and her nurse, Carla. But when a boy named Olly moves in next door, Maddy begins to fall in love.

Some great news! Glad Day Bookshop is the oldest LGBTQ bookstore in the world located in Toronto and it recently funded its move to a new space thanks to an IndieGoGo campaign. It hopes “to operate as a coffee shop and bookstore during the day and bar and performance space at night” while also dropping it’s stock from 4,000 books to 1,000 but with emphasis on “current, new, diverse titles.”

The 2016 Man Booker Prize has announced its longlist. I haven’t read a single one of them but if you’re interested, check them out here.

Storytime Underground is a collection of youth librarians whose mission is to “support, promote, and train each other to change the world with storytime.” Last week, they wrote a Twitter thread that explained why they were supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, that librarians have taken political stances in the past, and why they shouldn’t remain neutral. As someone who grew up in libraries, I don’t know what I would do if a place I considered a sanctuary was to refuse to speak up for a black muslim girl like me. It’s safe to say that this thread goMiles Morales - Ultimate Spider Man Animated Seriest me teary eyed.

San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) was this past weekend and there were some book related news. We got to see the first trailer of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods which looks great. I haven’t read the series but the cast looks phenomenal. It was also announced that young adult author, Jason Reynolds, will be writing a Miles Morales novel! Miles is the black hispanic Spider-Man who is currently the main Spider-Man in the Marvel universe. I’m just really happy that someone of colour is writing Miles’ story and that it’s Reynolds. I love his books. There were other Marvel novels announced like Good Night, Groot which is a children’s book written Brendan Deneen and drawn by Cale Atkinson, young adult novels featuring Captain Marvel and Black Widow, and a middle grade series with Squirrel Girl.
