Previously on Comics: Wonder Woman is President and Celebrates Zines

As June wraps up, things are warming up in the comics world. There has been a lot of news this past week, so let’s jump right in:

Comics

Vernieda informed us in this column last week: “In manga industry news, Libre Publishing has terminated its agreement with North American company Digital Manga, Inc. Libre is a Japanese publisher best known for its BL titles, such as the popular Kizuna and Finder series.” Now Libre has commented on Digital Manga, Inc’s press release. They start with appreciation of their fans and reassuring English readers about accessibility to their products.

FAKKU, an English publisher of hentai, is working with Toshio Maeda to release a remastered edition of Urotsukidoji aka Legend of the Overfiend. Maeda is considered the father of the tentacle porn genre and Urotsukidoji was one of the very first tentacle porn titles to be released in English. They’re using Kickstarter to crowdfund the project, which follows a recent trend in the North American manga industry to bring back older titles or improved editions of classic titles.

Paul Jenkins, who’s worked on titles like Hellblazer, Origin, and Spectacular Spider-Man, is teaming up with artist Leila Leiz, artist Brian Stelfreeze (Black Panther), and colorist Tamra Bonvillain (Rat Queens) to create Alters. This series coming out of AfterShock Comics focuses on a trans woman superhero, who is hiding both identities from the people around her.

The Kick-Ass comics are coming back to life, and this time with a black female lead. The story will be changed in multiple other ways, including a new city and new supporting character.

The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2 have somewhat of a cult following, which has been noticed by the comic world. Titan Comics plans to release a new line of comics based on these blood pressure raising films. The third movie in the series is expected for 2018.

Dan White is a cartoonist with a mission. His daughter Emily has spina bifida, a birth condition which affects the spinal cord, and he wants her to have a comic book hero to relate to, so he made her one. He wants his work to help represent disabled children.

Mobile Action Strike Kommand, or M.A.S.K., a cartoon from the 1980s a little similar to Transformers, will become a comic through the work of writer Brandon Easton and artist Tony Vargas for IDW Publishing.

Comics on Your Screens

In case you were wondering if you’d have to wait another 18 years to see Jim Carrey in another superhero movie (like the length of time between his role as the Riddler, and his part in Kick-Ass 2), you’re in luck (maybe). He’s joining up with horror director Eli Roth to bring to live-action the comic series Aleister Arcane, a spooky series about a horror TV show host.

Many Walking Dead fans can’t wait to see more of Lucille after last season’s finale. Those lucky individuals attending San Diego Comic Con at the end of July will have the chance to collect a special edition Lucille baseball bat: full-sized or keychain.

Last week we learned who the Superman on Supergirl will be played by. This week we’ve heard that Wonder Woman herself will also be joining the cast. That is, Lynda Carter will be playing the President of the United States on the show.

Broom-Hilda, a witch from a 1970 Chicago comic, may be seeing the big screen. Rights to the character have been purchased by producers Gilbert Adler and Jason A. Rosenberg. They hope to create a series of movies about the sassy witch.

International Zine Month

July is International Zine Month, so get those craft supplies out. Stolen Sharpie Revolution has a great list of 31 activities you can do to celebrate the month. Also, make sure to find and check out your local zine library, because July 21st is Zine Library Day.

Maybe you want to celebrate the month by checking out a long term zine like Oh You!which celebrates its tenth year running this month. There’s also Bustle’s list of female fronted fashion, beauty, and culture zines to keep you reading. Or maybe you’re ready to get started on your own masterpiece: Rookie has you covered.

Summer is also the time of conventions. WWAC’s own Sarah Richardson created a zine at Metatopia with a group of other creators about “con crash.” This compilation of warning signs, strategies, personal anecdotes and more is available for free.

Webcomics

Lezhin Comics is a pay platform for webtoons in South Korea. Recently IMM Private Equity invested $43 million (50 billion won) in the mobile-based entertainment provider. “Lezhin Entertainment plans to use the new fund to expand globally and secure more talents and contents.”

Rainbow Mansion is a webcomic taking a lesson from popular television. The series, written by Wanda Walker, is a play on the typical reality TV show. This story is centered on gay men, and readers of the comic get to vote to decide what happens next.
