Get Your Game On Wednesday: The Political Machine

Get Your Game On Wednesday Banner

Howdy, gaming lovelies! I survived the NH Primary and lived to tell the tale! Ironically, enough, I’m writing this week’s post from South Carolina which is another big campaign spot. So let the political and recreational games begin with this week’s gaming news you can use.

Jealous that you don’t get the circus of politicians in your state?

The Political Machine Ben CarsonNo worries, the fine folks over at Stardock Entertainment have you covered with the release of The Political Machine. For less than $10, you too can mudsling and out spend your fellow presidential hopefuls with a bobble-head candidate of your very own. It looks like a fun parody of the political process and for it’s currently discounted price of $7.49, it might be worth a laugh. Bonus delegates awarded (from me) for supporting a game development company with women in senior leadership.

Laser Kittens All the kitten games!

For those of you who don’t know, for some crazy reason I started collecting games with “kitten” in the title. I know, I know, what is wrong with me? Don’t turn into a crazy kitten game lady like me! On second thought, come to the dark side, it’s fluffy! This week, the Laser Kittens Kickstarter by Glittercats Fine Amusements has caught my eye. It’s a storytelling tabletop game about orphaned kittens learning how to be cats… and how to control their secret lasers! The game includes a changing Class Captain mechanic, to allow different players to set the scene, which may help you convince non-gamers to play. Admittedly, kitten games do go a long way to getting non-gamers to play tabletop card games with me, so this could be a gateway into storytelling or role playing games. Backing at $10 level, gets you access to the PDF rulebook; the $20 level gets you a physical copy. If kittens and gateway games aren’t enough to tempt you, add the triple threat of a company has excellent female creators on board.

Every day needs a splash of vocabulary and steampunk, so let’s look at Fireside Games’ announcement of their new card game Dastardly Dirigibles, coming in summer of 2016. Players compete to create the best airship by trying to use one of the nine suits to build their airship. The game runs for three rounds and is expected to play in an hour. The company is probably best known for their game, Castle Panic but you might not be aware that their team includes a female CEO, Marketing Manager and Production Artist.

Next tidal wave of women in game design

The University of Southern California’s Game Design Program has announced that women outnumber men in both their undergraduate and graduate program. The program is recognized as the #1 game design program in North America by the Princeton Review and GamePro Magazine. John Hockenberry of The Takeway interviews Tracy Fullerton, a professor and the director of the USC Games program. The audio interviews starts with talk of the Superbowl, but hang in for a few seconds, the 7 minute clip is worth a listen.

That’s it for this week! As always, feel free to add your thoughts or what games you’re playing in the comments. Until next week, happy gaming!
