Mighty Marvel Monday: The Deadpool Dilemma and Other Superbowl Goodies

Welcome back to a regularly scheduled Mighty Marvel Monday! It’s been over a month since I’ve done a traditional news round up, so it’s about time, right? Especially since Deadpool comes out this weekend and the Superbowl gave us so many new awesome commercials. And emojis!

So let’s get started.

The Deadpool Dilemma

This week Deadpool is being released, and I am conflicted. I’ve been conflicted about Deadpool for a long time, and that’s not because of Wade himself, but because of the people and fandom around him, including Deadpool cosplayers, and also because of Rob Liefeld, Deadpool’s creator.

See, Deadpool was created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza. I have zero problems with Fabian Nicieza. Rob Liefeld, however, is the worst, and because he’s the worst, there’s that little hesitation before doing anything that would get him more attention or opportunities. Fortuitously, Liefeld proved again why he’s the worst this weekend in this article on the New York Times. But Liefeld’s comments didn’t just provoke eyerolling from people who already disliked him. A number of other comics writers, including some who have since deleted their tweets, spoke out about the way Liefeld treated his co-creator. Dan Slott’s tweets are still up, so I will use his.

This sparked a so-called twitter war between Slott and Liefeld that drew even more attention.

Eventually the furor subsided, and after the Superbowl, Fabian Nicieza took to twitter to tell his side of the story

So, however you feel about Liefeld, credit, or the New York Times–that’s that.

But not all of Deadpool is connected to Liefeld, and there are some things about Deadpool that I love. There was a tumblr post recently that reminded me about some of the very cool things about Deadpool. Things like:

  • Deadpool is insecure
  • Deadpool has chronic pain
  • Deadpool is submissive in bed
  • Deadpool is pansexual
  • Deadpool lifts up his mask so Hawkeye can read his lips
  • Deadpool had a daughter
  • Deadpool didn’t believe she was his because she was too beautiful
  • Deadpool had to be dragged away from his daughter’s dead body by Cap and Wolverine
  • Deadpool carries Hello Kitty band aids
  • Deadpool is good with kids

Liefeld isn’t responsible for any of this canon, as far as I’m aware. I’m sure the Liefeld fans will correct me if I’m wrong.

And beyond the character in the comics, there’s some things about Ryan Reynolds that I love. I’ve written before about how I love that Ryan Reynolds and Tim Miller call Deadpool pansexual in defiance of Marvel’s most recent denial. But I found out that Ryan Reynolds became an executive producer for Deadpool for one reason–to make sure the character was treated right.

And Ryan Reynolds’s relationship with Deadpool is over a decade long. In Cable & Deadpool #2, an issue written by Fabian Nicieza, Deadpool describes himself as Ryan Reynolds crossed with a shar pei.

It’s because of this panel that Ryan Reynolds found out about Deadpool, and went on a decade-long quest to get the film made:

“Somebody sent me the comics in 2004 and said, ‘If they ever make a Deadpool movie, you’re Deadpool. Read these.’ And the first one I read, in the opening panel, somebody asks Deadpool what he looks like under the mask, and he says ‘I look like a cross between Ryan Reynolds and a Shar-Pei.’ So it was sort of destiny in a weird way. And I just fell in love with the character. So, ever since then I was trying to get [the movie] made.”

So, really, Rob Liefeld, maybe you should be giving credit where credit is due.

Moving on.

The Superbowl, in addition to reducing my mother to (happy) tears after Peyton Manning’s victory, was the informal launch of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War marketing campaign. We have a new trailer.

AND we have new Twitter emojis for #TeamCap and #TeamIronMan and some their team members and independent interested third parties (as T’Challa has been described).

They are the cutest. But you really need to zoom in to appreciate the attention to detail and cuteness. So I’ve created a zoomed in compilation version.

Even our darling male leads have gotten into the competitive spirit.

Please click on the tweets for the emojis and other media. Twitter is being mean.

Also, lest you think that the Superbowl only gave us more Stucky fodder, let me also share with you the Coke commercial that made the entire world have one reaction.

I don’t know how this happened, but it happened–and you know what? This still makes more sense than the Bruce-Nat storyline in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Oh, and one more piece of Superbowl Marvel-ousness. I would be remiss if I didn’t share the new X-Men: Apocalypse trailer too.

I’m still on the fence about this movie, but I do love the song that they used in this trailer. I used to work the closing shift in the coffeehouse on campus in college, and I played Coldplay’s Parachutes a lot.

So I’m going to stop there. But next week, barring any more PR excitement, I will be talking about religious iconography in the new Daredevil promos, linking to Deadpool reviews, and generally getting you caught up on the Marvel Universe.

There’s a lot of other very cool stuff that’s come out in the past month, but I’m going to end with this behind-the-scenes Agent Carter tweet, because I think it’s awesome.

  1. Ugh Liefeld is the worst. Although Fabian isn’t it my good books either ever since he stated that Deadpool isn’t pansexual he’s just mentally ill. I really hope Ryan Reynold et al succeed with this movie and that they do justice to the character. Long live pansexual Deadpool!!

    1. Yeah, Fabian’s comments on Deadpool’s constantly regenerating sexuality make zero sense. But it feels like Ryan Reynolds is more loyal to Deadpool than he is to Marvel–and why shouldn’t he be, considering Marvel is trying to pretend that the Fox movies don’t exist?
