Good News Everyone! Agent Carter Gets a Second Season

Agent Carter Banner, Marvel

Well ladies and gents, in the midst of all this Marvel hate stirred up by Joss Whedon and Age of Ultron, we have hope for this monstrosity of a franchise yet.

That’s right, folks: whether due to the power of #RenewAgentCarter, or simply the magnificence that is Hayley Atwell, Agent Carter has been renewed for a second season. We can all stop collectively holding our breath now and be thankful that we can go another season without having to rely solely on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to carry the ABC/Marvel universe, and I can continue using Agent Carter as my excuse for not tuning in to that hot mess.

In the slew of renewal announcements, ABC has ordered what will likely be another eight-episode season airing during the midseason break of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Showrunner Tara Butters recently discussed plans for the second season at Long Beach Comic Expo, stating that it will likely stay within its current time frame, and possibly move locations to Hollywood or Europe. On the topic of season length, she stated that, while she would like to have thirteen episodes to work with, keeping with eight is more manageable for the special effects budget.

Due to a potential AoS spinoff featuring Bobbi Morse (Adrienne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), and Marvel’s notoriously awesome treatment of their most popular female characters, Agent Carter’s renewal had been up in the air since its first season ended in February. Now, rumor has it that the spinoff has been put on hold, though it is unsure whether this move was a direct result of the decision to renew Agent Carter. Running three Marvel shows on ABC, in addition to their shows on Netflix would have provided the opportunity for year-round, non-stop programming, a lineup that would have doubtlessly become tiresome.

No word yet on improvement on the lady lead front, though let’s hope and pray that this is an indicator of better decisions to come from Marvel.
