Our First Official Look at the Suicide Squad!

David Ayer released the first official promotional picture of the entire Suicide Squad cast on Twitter. From left to right the cast includes: Adam Beach (Slipknot), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang ), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Karen Fukuhara (Katana ), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Will Smith (Deadshot), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), and Jay Hernandez (El Diablo). WWAC staffer and social media editor, Ardo and Desiree, share their initial reactions.

Ardo: So Desiree, what did you think? Yay or Nay?

Desiree: I love it! Especially the fact the cast is so thoroughly diverse, and includes three women. I may be setting the bar low but compared to other team movies this is great. We’re also getting Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) so that’s another women of color in the cast.

I also thoroughly like the idea of a not-superhero movie. What did you think of the costumes overall?

Ardo: I LOVE Katana’s look. It’s very street samurai and I’m excited to have her on the cast given that 1) she’s a badass and 2) she’s a woman of colour which is a rare occurrence in these types of films (and film overall). Harley’s costume is growing on me and Margot Robbie exudes Harley Quinn with that joyful smile and a what looks like a gun underneath her jacket. It’s a “I’m having so much fun, but also, when can we kill people?” vibe that feels very Harley. Not sure about the tattoos but it feels more Harley than it does Joker in my opinion. Enchantress also looks intimidating. Oh wait, there are boys in this photo too??? Ha. What did you think of the rest of the cast?

Desiree: I think they all look like criminals, which is what the Squad is. I can’t wait to see this team in action because they’re not superheroes. They’re killers, or thieves, or arms dealers, or assassins for hire, but they’ll work together for their own gain. That’s different from what we’ve seen in other superhero movies in the last decade. I like the interpretation of Killer Croc, and Deadshot looks well done, but I like him better with the mask. The other guys are a little interchangeable as far as their costumes go. The ladies are the standout here. How would you compare this to Jared Leto’s Joker reveal from last week?

Ardo: Well, the reactions so far seem to be more positive than the Joker’s photo which was very divisive. I love Deadshot with the mask (I love your face too, Will!) and I love that the backdrop says, “Welcome to Belle Reve.” This team looks like fun and I hope that they don’t water down their roles as villains by trying to make them heroic. The Suicide Squad is a means to an end for everyone so I expect some backstabbing and general unease when it comes to having each other’s backs.

So Desiree, excited for the film?

Desiree: I am thoroughly excited for the film. Like I said, this isn’t a superhero movie, this is a villains movie. I’m happy to see DC taking a chance on such a lesser known franchise and pushing diversity further. These guys walk that line where some of them are outright villains, others are more gray, some just don’t care. I’m a big fan of villainous characters but so few writers can get them right. They make them simple, and unexciting to watch because they recycle the same motivations. See Marvel and all their villains with daddy issues.

I’m excited to see a diverse non-superhero movie that’s still based on the comics. Plus Viola Davis as Amanda Waller will be smashing.

Also Robbie looks like Harley Quinn personified. She looks like cotton candy wrapped up in mayhem and I love it. The costume is a combination of her New 52 look, and the style they’re going for in the movies. It’s distinctive without objectifying her and since she’s the biggest “named” character in this movie that’s important.

Any final thoughts Ardo?

Ardo: When can I watch it????? It’ll be out in 2016 so I’m mentally pre-buying my ticket.

  1. I love this. Truly, I was most worried about Will Smith’s Deadshot costume. I really think he going to be the anchor of the cast, I mean c’mon it’s Will Smith. We all love Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man but even RDJ doesn’t have Will Smith’s levels of charisma and humor. So I’m getting really excited for this, so much more so than SupermanVsBatman.
