Preacher Casts Ruth Negga as Tulip

We have our first piece of official Preacher casting news from AMC: Ruth Negga has been cast as female lead character Tulip!

Negga’s previous geek TV credits include Misfits and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She also played Shirley Bassey in the BBC’s 2011 TV biopic of the veteran singer/goddess, which isn’t exactly a geek culture production but is an impressive feat nonetheless.

Although Tulip is a blonde white woman in the source material and Negga is Ethiopian-Irish, this casting choice shouldn’t incur significant changes to the core of the character. In fact, it could even enhance some of her story — Preacher‘s eponymous lead character Jesse Custer is Tulip’s ex-/current boyfriend, and in the comic his evil ex-Southern belle grandmother Marie hates the role that Tulip plays in his life. If Tulip is black and biracial, Marie’s sentiments towards her may take on another (obvious, but narratively consistent) dimension beyond the desire to control Jesse.

I’m now very interested in the future decisions of the Preacher team, casting-oriented or otherwise. If they’re aware of which aspects of character and story are mutable and which ones aren’t, this could be a good series. As long as that Dominic Cooper rumor isn’t true…
