The DC Daily Planet: Aquaman Looks Great, World is Confused

Happy Friday! Today’s DC Daily Planet is brought to you by Jason Momoa’s killer ink, trident, and a smolder Flynn Rider would envy. Yes, it’s true. DC’s done the impossible, crusaders: they’ve made Aquaman sexy.

Zack Snyder tweeted the first image of Momoa as Aquaman at just about 1AM this morning, and it’s so cool, he gets not one, but two taglines:

Guys, I…I’m interested. In Aquaman. Someone take my hand and help me through this very confusing time.

I do want to point out, however, that thus far I have seen no real complaints about the lack of Aquaman’s classic costume, or the grayscale of the photo — not the case when we got our first photos of Diana’s costume. Hmm.

More (but less exciting) casting news: Friday Night Light‘s Jay Hernandez is joining the Suicide Squad movie, possibly as a cellmate to Jared Leto’s Joker. Okay. Can’t we just get ride of Leto, instead? No news on who’ll be replacing Tom Hardy as Rick Flag in the same production, although Will Smith has said “[they]still have to get it right.”

That is, traditionally, better than getting it wrong, yes! Thanks, Will Smith.

Toy Fair 2015 happened, and DC debuted a number of new statues: most interestingly, they were largely of female characters. The Bombshells and Cover Girls line particularly added a few more to their number, and new statues of Batgirl and Harley Quinn were popular. My takeaway? I want to go to a Toy Fair.

How’s your week been, crusaders? Let me know in the comments.

  1. I’ve been saying all day that I’m having alllll kinds of feelings towards Aquaman that I didn’t know were possible. It’s like a whole new world opened up & the possibilities are sexy.

  2. I’d like to think the casting choice is specifically to deal with the stigma that poor Aquaman suffers. The guy is totally badass and his powers rival Superman — AND he can summon bigass kaiju to lay the smack down on anyone — AND he rules a whole damn kingdom that makes up the majority of the earth? Can we just ditch Superman and Batman and just make this a Wondy and Art movie?

    • How do you always speak to my soul Wendy?

I actually really enjoy Aquaman’s current n52 title, but he has a bit of a bad rep. I think people still see the guy from Superfriends riding on two fish and calling out to his dolphin friends. But Arthur is like, crazy powerful, Mera is kickass, and his team (Garth, Kaldur, Tula, and Lorena talk about a diverse team too!) is freaking awesome. Seriously. I want some more love for families/legacies outside of the Batfam please and thank you.

Back to Arthur I love his new look, Jason is bringing it. I love that they incorporated his tribal tattoos too they’re not glossing over his MOC or cultural status and I’m swooning over it. Him and Wondy are the only ones working that dark color palette.

  3. Ginnis Tonik on

Have they done a bombshell Nightwing yet? I love the bombshell girls, but I also want some bombshell boys.
