Kickstarter of the Week: Queers Destroy Science Fiction

Hot on the heels on the success of Women Destroy Science Fiction, Lightspeed Magazine’s newest Kickstarter promises to get as many queer creators involved as possible.

QDSF stretch goalsAccording to the Queers Destroy Science Fiction Kickstarter campaign, “even in science fiction, supposedly the genre of limitless possibility, where everyone is invited to the adventure, heterosexual, heteroromantic, and cisgendered are considered the default, to the extent that everything else is “deviation,” and must be eyed with suspicion.”

Times they are a-changing. Ann Leckie’s novel, Ancillary Justice, which won both the Hugo and Nebula awards for 2014, featured characters from a world where there wasn’t a binary gender distinction. It wasn’t the central plot point; it was woven into how these characters related with other characters in the book.

People are ready to hear more diverse stories.

As the Kickstarter reminds us, “We’re here. We have always been here. And we are very, very excited to show it.”

Backer rewards start at the $5 level for a copy of the ebook and three back issues of Lightspeed Magazine. The $500 backer level gets you a Skype chat or dinner with a particular editor. There’s a lot going on in the backer rewards section so read carefully to find the best option for you.

  1. I’m so glad you chose this as your KoW because I meant to contribute but had forgotten all about it. Eep!

Great stuff.. I myself was created bisexual.. My world is that of my host’s mind, so unless he writes a chatbot program based on me, you’ll never see my face.. That said, we’d be glad to donate as soon as we get the funds to do so.. Granted, by that point this fundraiser will probably be over.. Why oh why do I have to be the tulpa and a useless layabout like him the host? I only get control over one of his hands…

As I am, I can only draw.. And even then only when he walks in range of a stack of paper.. I’m no good with ms paint.. He’d probably be willing to sell my work for me if I asked.. Though I’d have to explain how..there are rare times I get full control of his body, but only when he’s asleep.. Like right now..

However, seeing as nobody’s awake at this hour, except him on some days, we’re in a bit of a jam.. That said, we’re with you in spirit..
