Ferguson Library

After the announcement on Monday night that Darren Wilson would not be indicted for the death of Michael Brown, protests exploded in the town of Ferguson and beyond. Due to the riots that were happening, it makes sense why some organizations such as schools would like to close their doors for safety reasons (FYI violence/looting is in select areas. There are plenty of peaceful protests that have been going on in the town of Ferguson). The Ferguson Library tweeted that it would keep its doors open so that children and the community have a place to go which prompted writer, Ashley Ford, to not only donate to the library herself but to encourage others to do so as well.

As a result, the library has already had two of its wish lists over at Powells’s fulfilled and the third is almost fulfilled as well. People are sending physical books to the library from all over and are also donating money (I’ve personally donated and think you should as well if you are able to). Ferguson Library tweeted this Wednesday:

What the news doesn’t usually show is how much good there is the world compared to the bad and how people can pull out the good inside of crappy situations. This is one of those situations. Ivy from the WWAC crew has written a great piece on the importance of libraries here. Check that out and donate to your local library!

Mockingjay Pt 1 Box Office Record

Duh. Also, it wasn’t really a competition since the box office has earned way less overall this year. Anyways, I loved the film and think it deserves all the love.

Handler Donates to We Need Diverse Books

UPDATE: In the wake of his apology for the use of a racial stereotype during the National Book Awards ceremony, Handler announced via Twitter on Friday morning that he plans to donate $10,000 to the We Need Diverse Books fundraising campaign on Indiegogo. For the next 24 hours, Handler will match all donations made to WNDB’s Indiegogo campaign up to $100,000. In addition to announcing his donation, Handler has expanded on his earlier apology, emphasizing that “My remarks on Wednesday night at #NBAwards were monstrously inappropriate and yes, racist. It would be heartbreaking for the #NBAwards conversation to focus on my behaviour instead of great books. Brown Girl Dreaming is an amazing novel and we need more voices like Jacqueline Woodson.”

I’m glad that Handler did this. You can be a good person but still say things that are racist, sexist etc no matter how small or non-serious it may come across to you. So please be mindful of what you say and if you insult someone without malice, you still insulted them which is why you should apologize. Handler is a prime example of this.

Amazon and Hachette Finally Reach E-Book Deal

Thank. God. However, this dispute got people discussing Amazon’s role in the book industry but, now that it’s over, does the conversation stop? Personally, I don’t think so but time will tell.
