I’m Loving: Féminin/Féminin

Féminin/Féminin is a new web series written and directed by Chloé Robichaud. Think The L Word having a party with The Real L Word in Quebec, but not annoying.

The series follows a group of friends, lesbian, bi, and straight, and their various  embarrassing and poignant romantic misadventures. Interspersed with the low key dramedy are “unscripted” interviews with the characters, courtesy of their acquaintance Robichaud, who is making a documentary about them. It’s an opportunity for Robichaud to approach the characters from two different angles: under examination, and living their daily lives. This meta aspect of the show is done without comment or fanfare.

We only have one episode so far, but I’m already loving it. The characters are charming, the vibe and direction are low key and natural-seeming, and although it’s preoccupied with love above all else, Féminin/Féminin is more observational comedy than soap opera. And a special treat, as far as I’m concerned, is that it’s not obsessed with ironic distance–instead, Féminin/Féminin approaches the characters with affection and an easy, unhurried honesty.
